Steven Francis Kanaly (born March 14, 1946) is an American actor best known for his role as Ray Krebbs on CBS primetime soap opera Dallas.

Personal life

Kanaly released a radio public service announcement for CARE in 1981, and in 1992 NRA ads promoting responsible firearms ownership, he and former Dallas costar Susan Howard were included. In Ojai, California, he and his wife live on a ranch. He is known as a highly respected watercolor artist.

Early life and career

Kanaly was born in Burbank, California, and grew up in the San Fernando Valley. He attended Northridge State University. Kanaly was stationed in Vietnam as a radio operator with the First Air Cavalry Division. He outlined his time with Apocalypse Now screenwriter John Milius, who wrote scenes in the film involving Colonel Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall). He once recalled how he came to film acting - he recalled how he became an actor.

Kanaly is best known for his appearance as Ray Krebbs, the foreman of the Southfork Ranch, on the prime-time soap opera Dallas from 1978 to 1989. He appeared in 1991 for the last episode of the series and later in 2000's made-for-TV reunion film Dallas: War of the Ewings (1998). In the 2012 TNT revival, he reprised his role as a guest at his nephew Christopher's wedding. Kanaly reprised Ray Krebbs' role in 2013 to attend J. R. Ewing's funeral.

He appeared in other series, including Time Express in 1979, during Dallas' tenure. Seabone Hunkle, the father of Dixie Cooney Martin, was played by Cady McClain from 1994 to 1995. Kanaly has also appeared on several other television shows. He collaborated with writer-director John Milius on film, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, Dillinger, The Wind and the Lion, and Big Wednesday. When Milius and Kanaly met at the same shooting range in California, they converted him to acting by recommending him to John Huston for Roy Bean. The Terminal Man, My Name Is Nobody, and Midway were among other film roles. He starred as J.T. In an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger, the fuller is included.
