Sterling Kelby Brown (born April 5, 1976) is an American actor.
In the first season of the FX anthology series American Crime Story, subtitled "People vs. O. J. Simpson," he made his breakthrough in 2016 when he played prosecutor Christopher Darden.
For his work in a Limited Series or Movie, he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor.
He began acting Randall Pearson in the NBC drama series This Is Us in 2017, earning Brown his second Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Drama, as well as a Screen Actor Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.
Early life
Brown was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Sterling Brown and Aralean Banks Brown. He has two sisters and two brothers. He died when he was ten years old. He went by the name Kelby as a child; when he turned 16, he adopted the word Sterling, a noun. The following was published in 2016:
Brown grew up in Olivette, Missouri, an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, and attended Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School.
He received an acting degree from Stanford University in 1998. He started out wanting to excel in economics with a focus on company but then fell in love with being a freshman. He later graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Personal life
Brown met actress Ryan Michelle Bathe as a Stanford freshman. They eloped in March 2006 but held a large wedding in June 2007. Andrew and Amaré have two sons.
Career
Brown, a classically trained actor, appeared in a number of regional theater productions after college. He has appeared on numerous television shows, including ER, NYPD Blue, JAG, Boston, Alias, Without a Trace, Supernatural, and Third Watch. He appeared in films including Stay with Ewan McGregor, Brown Sugar with Taye Diggs, and Trust the Man with David Duchovny and Julianne Moore, and was a regular in the comedy Starved.
Gordon Walker, a recurring character on the television show Supernatural, appeared as vampire hunter Gordon Walker. He appeared on Medium as Dr. Roland Burton on Army Wives and Detective Cal Beecher on Person of Concern. He appeared on Eli Stone's "Patience" episode in 2008. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther, he appeared as N'Jobu this year.
Brown delivered the commencement address at Stanford University in June 2018. He appeared on the NYPD sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine as a guest star and has received critical acclaim for his role as Philip Davidson, a dentist under scrutiny for murdering his business partner. In 2018, he was nominated for the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for this appearance.
