Early life and education
Courtney was born in Stony Point, New York, the youngest of three children of a high school history teacher father and a singer mother. She earned a degree in English from Binghamton University in 1992, where she appeared in The Crucible as Elizabeth Proctor. "I never tortured over whether I wanted to become an actress," she said by then. In my mind, there was never another option." She then migrated to New York City, where her roommate, future author and columnist Meghan Daum, was alumnus. Courtney studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse while serving as the evening secretary for Smith Barney chairman Robert F. Greenhill.
Jennifer Courtney, a child of actress Jennifer Courtney, and her sister, actress Jennifer Courtney, were transferred to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles and Aspen Comedy Festival, the two produced and performed "Those Courtney Girls." She joined the improvisational and sketch comedy troupe The Groundlings' training program in 2004 and became a member of the 30-person main company. Scott Kolanach, the theater's lighting director, met her there, whom she married in 2008.
She worked a variety of trades, from catering to support herself, during her early days in Los Angeles.
She has appeared in films including The Brothers Solomon, Blades of Glory, The Heartbreak Kid, Melvin Goes to Dinner, and Fred: The Movie.
