The Notting Hill Carnival in West London has been a success with packed streets and vibrant parades for almost 60 years as hundreds of thousands of people gather to celebrate Caribbean history. Other photos depict revellers on the streets near Portobello Road (top right), which was also present in 1975. As well as yesterday and 1988 photos, the attraction to flock to balconies and window ledges is a classic Notting Hill feature (bottom right).

Notting Hill revelers halt the party for 72 seconds and remember the lives of those soldiers

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 28, 2022
At Notting Hill Carnival on Wednesday, a 72-second silence was held to commemorate the lives of those who were killed in the Grenfell fire tragedy. At 3 p.m., the carnival, which is an annual event that celebrates Caribbean history and is open to all, came to a halt as a result of all those affected by the fire. Despite the fact that the group had done so in 2017 and 2019, it comes as organisers were slammed for failing to schedule such a silence this year. Due to the pandemic, the carnivals in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled. The partygoers had planned to stop dancing, singing, and playing music and joined as a group. However, MailOnline understands that some people were left upset and angry after no silence appeared to be kept within sight of the tower itself. Mayor Sadiq Khan said he would'never forget' the summer of 2017 and the 'awful' tragedy, which he spoke at at the carnival.

Dark shadow of Grenfell looms over carnival: Notting Hill revellers pause for 72-second silence

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 28, 2022
At the first carnival that has been held since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 72-second silence was held. It comes as organisers were previously chastised for failing to schedule one. In addition to the silence, parade organisers wore green as a special thanks to the victims (right). Partygoers stopped dancing, singing, and playing music and joined as a community. Due to the flammable cladding and insulation, the fire, which started on the fourth floor due to a fault with an electrical appliance, was quickly spreading across the tower's exterior. Many people were left homeless on higher floors with no way out because the only fire exit was blocked.

More than 1,000 people attended the Panorama steelband competition last night, marking the return of Notting Hill Carnival. Notting Hill Carnival: Residents and businesses board up windows as annual festival returns

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 26, 2022
Residents and company owners have battened down the hatches as they brace for the grand return of Notting Hill Carnival this weekend. According to the 'ongoing chaos and danger' of coronavirus, the carnival was postponed for the second year in a row. But massive fences have been built across swaths of the historic north west London streets in anticipation of the festival's return, though windows have been closed tight ahead of the three days of carnage. As some people choose to escape the chaos of Europe's biggest street party by leaving their homes for the weekend, boards have been also posted around rows of front gardens. The carnival will be back for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2013, with travel plans being scuppered as more than 1,000 bus drivers prepare to cause mayhem over the weekend by staging a walkout over pay.

How the Notting Hill Carnival brought a fractured community together after racist murder

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 26, 2022
Although the two-day festival has been held in outdoor capacity since 1966, Claudia Jones' indoor celebrations have roots. The Caribbean Carnival (Jones, who were left at the festival in 1959 and then every year until 1966), was arranged by Jones in response to troubling race relations in the aftermath of the 1958 Notting Hill riots. These demonstrations took place in England during the influx of members of the 'Windrush' generation. They were the thousands of inhabitants of Caribbean countries who immigrated to the United Kingdom between 1948 and 1971 and were met with hostility by some of them. Jones arranged the indoor festival in the hopes of uniting communities. It was televised by the BBC, and it involved dancing, music, and a beauty pageant. Jones herself and hundreds of others are photographed having a ball. Kelso Cochrane, a black aspiring lawyer who was from Antigua, died after being attacked by ethnics in Notting Hill, four months after the first Caribbean Carnival. When the famous Russ Henderson Steel Band appeared in 1966, his murder, which remains unsolved, prompted another activist, Rhaune Laslett, to organise a children's street fayre. Every year since then (1994 shown top right and 2019 bottom right) - bar in 2020 and 2021 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

If you didn't watch the women's Euro final on Sunday, where were you? You will know that the Lionesses defeated England in a historic win by now. It's the first time the team has ever won a major championship, setting a major turning point for women's football. The final was watched by 87,192 people at Wembley Stadium, which was a record-breaking turnout. Becky Hill kicked off the performance on the Pepsi Max stage ahead of the game, bringing the entire country into the party spirit with their empowering dance hits. Their songs "My Heart Goes (La Di Da), "Remember," and "Free" (a collaboration with Ultra Naté and Stefflon Don) seemed to be the ultimate demonstration of girl power. Despite such a celebratory occasion and a large audience for women's sport, some viewers were more concerned about Hill's appearance than what their result stood for — and they took to Twitter to protest about it.
