Stefan Lofven Life

Kjell Stefan Löfven (Swedish pronunciation: [stfan lvvn]; officially Löfvén; born 21 July 1957) is a Swedish politician who serves as the President of the European Socialists since October 2022. He served as Prime Minister of Sweden from October 2014 to November 2021, as well as Party Leader from 2012 to 2021.

Löfven started working as a welder after leaving school and completing military service in the Swedish Air Force. He also became a prominent trade unionist at the time. He was eventually elected as an ombudsman in the Swedish Metalworkers' Union (SMU), and in January 2006, Löfven was elected the first Chairman of IF Metall, a new'super' trade union formed after smaller unions, including the SMU, voted to merge. Löfven was unanimously selected by the executive board of the Social Democratic Party after the departure of H. Juholt in January 2012. Despite the fact that he did not have a seat in the Riksdag at the time, Löfven became the Opposition leader.

During the 2014 election, Löfven led the Social Democrats. Despite initial opinion poll results, Löfven retained only a single seat in the new government after the party's poor results in the governing Moderate Party's losing 23 seats, but it was able to establish a minority coalition government with the Green Party. On October 3, 2014, he was elected prime minister of Sweden. In the aftermath of the controversial 2018 election, which saw both main parties suffer losses, Löfven was able to obtain abstentions from MPs from the Centre Party, the Left Party, and the Liberals, and was re-elected prime minister by the Riksdag in January 2019. Löfven won a confidence motion in the Riksdag on June 2121, prompting a brief crisis that was resolved on July 5th when Löfven declared that reforms to reform the government had been successful, and the Riksdag confirmed Löfven as prime minister two days later in a vote on June 2121. Löfven, dubbed a "political escape artist" and the "Harry Houdini of European politics," was able to continue as Prime Minister in a turbulent Swedish political landscape dating back to 2014.

Löfven revealed on August 22nd that he would stand down as the head of the Social Democrats at the November party convention and then resign as prime minister until his successor is elected. Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson was the only candidate on the congress to replace Löfven in September 2021. On November 4, Andersson was elected party leader. Löfven officially resigned as prime minister on November 10, 2021, but he continued to lead a caretaker government until his replacement took power on November 30, 2021.

Early life and education

Löfven was born in Aspudden, Stockholm, on July 21, 1957, and his father died before he was born. He was placed in an orphanage before being looked after by a foster family from Sunnersta, Sollefte, where he grew up. According to the deal with this family, his birth mother would regain custody of him if she were to; however, this did not happen;

Ture Melander (1926-2003) was a lumberjack and later a factory employee, but his foster mother, Iris Melander (née Söderlund, 1929-2020), worked as an in-home caregiver. He attended Sollefte High School before beginning a 48-week welding course at Arbetsmarknadsutbildningen (AMU, Unemployment Career Training) in Kramfors, and it's unclear if he completed the course. Löfven later pursued social work at Ume University, but after a year and a half, he was forced to leave.

Life after politics

Löfven was appointed by United Nations Secretary General António Guterres as co-chair of the High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism in 2022, alongside Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Personal life

Löfven is a fan of sports and supports the ice hockey team Modo from rnsköldsvik and the football clubs Tottenham Hotspur and GIF Sundsvall. Ulla Löfven, a politician and trade unionist, has 2 children. Löfven himself has no biological children.

Stefan Lofven Career

Political career

Löfven has been a member of the Social Democrats since the age of 13 and was active in SSU, the youth league, in his teens. Löfven was elected to the executive board of the Social Democrats in 2006, shortly after becoming chairman of trade union IF Metall.

In January 2012, following the resignation of Håkan Juholt, it was reported that Löfven was being considered as his successor. On 26 January 2012 the executive board nominated Löfven to become the party's new leader. On 27 January 2012, Löfven was elected leader in a party-room ballot. Löfven was confirmed as party leader at the party's bi-annual congress on 4 April 2013.

Löfven led his party through the 2014 European Parliament election where the Social Democrats retained their position as the largest party from Sweden in the European Parliament. However, the election results at 24.19% was a slightly inferior result than the result in the 2009 European Parliament election; the party's seats in the European Parliament was reduced from six to five and the party's results was the lowest in an election at the national level since universal suffrage was introduced in 1921.
