Two popes and one question - how do we move from era to era? The Two Popes, PATRICK MARMION, explains

MARTIME ARMION: This fine revival of Anthony McCarten's play about Popes Benedict and Francis is poignantly timely at a time of transition in the Royal Family. It's a fundamental question of how we transition from one era to another and how an incumbent interacts with their office that is on our minds today. The play, which was turned into a film starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, is a look at what happened behind the scenes in 2013, when Benedict shocked the world's 1.2 billion Catholics by becoming the first pontiff to step down in 700 years. Anton Lesser - with Nicholas Woodeson as Francis - portrays the Pope's fading soul, and both men and women find a lot of warmth in the men's tense souls. The big issue is whether or not the Catholic Church should revive or revert its 2,000-year-old traditions. However, both McCarten and the actors are focusing on the two guys as human beings with a slew of responsibility.

The EastEnders actress, 60, who divorced from actor Richard Lumsden, has admitted that although Emma is used to donning glamorous gowns on the red carpet, she much prefers to buy her clothes in charity shops. Emma, who appeared in the racy comedy-drama Good Luck to You, Leo Grande's latest film, now owns properties in north London, Scotland, and Venice.

RICHARD EDEN (Inset): Dr. David Starkey (pictured) is causing a ruckus again, this time as he takes on the notoriously prickly trans lobby (inset). The television historian, who was 'cancelled' after making racial remarks in 2020, now questions the right of transgender people to identify themselves as female. 'It's a act of faith,' he says, 'It's preposterous to believe that a man can become a woman.'
