The album reached number two in the UK Albums Chart and was certified double platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Early life

Ellis-Bextor was born in London to Janet Ellis, who was a presenter on BBC's children's television programmes Blue Peter and Jigsaw, and Robin Bextor, a film producer and director: they separated when she was four. As a child, Ellis-Bextor occasionally appeared on Blue Peter alongside her mother, who presented the programme.

She attended St. Stephen's School and later the independent Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith. Among her earliest public performances were with the W11 Opera children's opera from the age of thirteen, and she is now a patron of the organisation.

Ellis-Bextor has said, "I didn't see myself as a good-looking girl and that was good, because I didn't rely on it. (…) I've now found lots of like-minded weirdos, so it's OK."

Personal life

Ellis-Bextor married the Feeling bassist Richard Jones in 2005. Jones has said, "Something kind of smacked us in the face. The chemistry was incredible—it was like nothing I've ever experienced." They have five sons. Their first child was born two months early, only eight months after the start of their relationship. Ellis-Bextor suffered from pre-eclampsia (the onset of high blood pressure) during her first two pregnancies, resulting in both deliveries being premature. She is an ambassador for Borne, a medical research charity looking into the causes of premature birth.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Career

Career

Ellis-Bextor started singing lead vocals in the indie band Theaudience in 1996. The band released four singles, including the UK Top 40 hits "I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough), "A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed"), and one self-titled album (theaudience (1999)). Robin Bextor's father produced videos for the band's singles. Despite being in Theaudience, readers of Melody Maker voted Ellis-Bextor number one in a poll of'most sexy people in rock'.

After demos for a planned second album were turned down by their label Mercury Records, who then dropped the band, the band broke down in 1999. Ellis-Bextor performed a duet with Manic Street Preachers, "Black Holes for the Young," as a B-side for their 1998 album "The Everlasting," and the Departure Lounge's Out of Here released in 1999.

Ellis-Bextor joined Italian DJ Spiller in 2000, adding vocals to his album "Groovejet" (If This Ain't Love). "Murder on the Dancefloor" became Europe's most popular song of 2002. Shoot from the Hip was her second album and "Mixed Up World" and "I Won't Change You" were released in October 2003 and released two more top-ten singles, "Mixed Up World" and "I Won't Change You." The album debuted at number 19 on the UK charts and was rated silver by the BPI for shipments of 60,000 units. Ellis-Bextor described the album as "more accessible" and "a little more left-of-centre at times" than Read My Lips. "It has more of a live feel [...] It's still a pop album, with elements of disco, indie, and rock." Since becoming pregnant, she decided to take a break from music promotion.

With the blessing of the local Labour council, a grid of seven streets in Kemptown near the seafront will be cordoned off for a 'Pride Village Party' connected to the 'Fabuloso' two-day festival in Preston Park on August 2 and 3. Revellers will pay £15 a head to access the entertainment zone of bars, venues and eateries, for what organisers promise will be 'an unforgettable weekend of fundraising celebrations'. Brighton Pride attracts an estimated 500,000 people to the city and is estimated to contribute about £30million to the local economy each year. But some of those who live in the fenced-off streets or run businesses there  say they are being 'illegally' stripped of their civil rights for the duration of the event.

Is there anything more important in a Christmas dinner than getting the roast potatoes right?! In our house, it’s the thing we all get the most excited about. richardjonesface and I have spent many Sundays cooking a roast and getting them just *french kiss* so here is our recipe to make sure every potato has just the right golden crispy outside and warm fluffy inside that you deserve. Find this recipe and loads more in our cook book Love. Food. Family, available at the link in my bio. Xx Roast Potatoes serves 6 2kg (4lb 8oz) potatoes (Maris Piper or russets), peeled and cut into 5cm (2 inch) chunks 4 tablespoons olive oil/goose fat/vegetable oil (whatever your preference is), plus extra for drizzling 2 tablespoons semolina (optional) 1 garlic bulb, split into cloves 3 rosemary sprigs splash of malt vinegar salt and black pepper Preheat the oven to 200°C (425°F), Gas Mark 7. Place the prepped potatoes into a large pan of cold water as you go so that they don’t discolour. Season the water generously with salt, then set the pan over a medium-high heat and bring to the boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes until fork tender. Meanwhile, pour your chosen oil or fat into your largest roasting tray and put it in the oven to get nice and hot. When the potatoes are tender, drain in a colander, then leave to steam for a few minutes. Return to the pan and shake a few times to fluff up the potatoes. As an added extra for more crunch, you can sprinkle over the semolina and shake again. Remove the tray from the oven, carefully tip the potatoes into the hot oil and lightly toss. Roast for 35 minutes, then remove from the oven. Using the flat edge of a chef ’s knife, firmly smash the garlic cloves along with the rosemary and mix in a small bowl with some malt vinegar, a little olive oil and some salt and pepper and add these to the tray. Toss, then return the tray to the oven for a further 20–25 minutes until the potatoes are deeply golden and crisp.
