Sonja Yelich Life

Sonja Yelich (born 1965) is a Croatian-New Zealand writer.

She is the mother of Lorde, a New Zealand singer and songwriter.

Early life

Sonja Yelich (Croatian: Jeli) was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1965, into an immigrant family from Dalmatia's region. She studied literature at the University of Auckland and became a qualified tutor.

Personal life

Yelich and her husband Vic O'Connor live in Auckland as of October 2013. They have four children: Jerry (born 1994), Ella (born 1996), India "Indy" (born 1998), and son Angelo (born 2001). The couple became engaged in June 2014 and married on May 6, 2017.

Career

In AUP Poets 2 (2002), Yelich's early poetry was included. At the New Zealand Book Awards, her first collection of poems, Clung (Auckland University Press, 2004), received the coveted 'Best First Book of Poetry' award. In 2002, 2005, 2005, and 2008, her poems were chosen for the Best New Zealand Poems collection. She was also included in New New Zealand Poets in Performance (AUP, July 2008), a book that came with a accompanying CD.

Get Some (AUP, 2008), Yelich's second collection of poetry, was a finalist in the New Zealand Post Book Awards. .. This week, "Edgar," an American marine who is serving in Iraq, is the subject of this article.

Yelich was awarded a Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship (with Sarah Laing) in 2010 which allowed her to write full-time at the Sargeson Centre. The Centre is located close to the University of Auckland, and recipients of a NZ$40,000 yearly stipend are given.
