Sombhu Mitra (22 August 1915-1997) was an Indian film and stage actor, producer, playwright, reciter, and an Indian theatre performer, best known for his appearance in Bengali theatre, where he is recognized as a pioneer.
He worked with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) for a few years before establishing the Bohurupee theatre company in Kolkata in 1948.
He is best known for films like Dharte Raho (1946), Jagte Raho (1956), and his production of Rakta Karabi based on Rabindranath Tagore's 1954 debut as a playwright, and the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, as well as the 1976 Ramon Magsaysay Award.
Early life and education
Sombhu Mitra, a graduate of the Geological Survey of India, and Satadalbasini Mitra, born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, was the sixth child of three sons and four daughters born of Sarat Kumar Mitra, an employee of the Geological Survey of India and Satadalbasini Mitra. When his mother was 12 years old, he died.
He began his education at Chakraberia Middle English School, Calcutta, and later joined the Ballygunge Government High School, Calcutta, where he developed an interest in reading Bengali plays and became involved in school dramas. In 1931, he entered St. Xavier's College of Calcutta and soon began attending the local theatre.
Career
In 1939, he appeared in Rangmahal Theatre in north Kolkata, then on to the Minerva, Natyaniketan, and Srirangam theatres.
He joined the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) in 1943. When the play Nabanna, written by Bijon Bhattacharya and co-directed by Sombhu Mitra for IPTA was staged in 1944, several old theatre traditions were broken. In 1948, Sombhu Mitra founded Bohurupee in Kolkata, which herded the group-theatre movement in West Bengal.
