Career
Simon Neil, born in Irvine, Scotland, formed Biffy Clyro in 1995, recruiting Kilmarnock-born Ben Johnston and someone known only as Barry on drums and bass respectively. Barry Johnston, Ben's twin brother, was quickly dismissed, and Biffy Clyro was almost formed. The trio migrated to Glasgow, where Neil studied Electronics with Music at the University of Glasgow in 1997. He also worked on film and television for a year before going back to pursue music full-time. Simon's musical tastes had widened by then; a Beggars Banquet representative appeared onstage at T in the Park in 2000. The band was signed to the independent Beggar's Banquet soon after.
Biffy Clyro has since released nine albums, pledged to a major record company, and toured relentlessly. Neil has said that Biffy Clyro songs often arise from words he writes in a notebook he keeps by his bed.
Neil collaborates with JP Reid of fellow Ayrshire group Sucioperro in Marmaduke Duke under the pseudonym "The Atmosphere," the group's first album, "The Magnificent Duke," which was released in 2005.
In late 2008, it was revealed that Duke Pandemonium would make a comeback in 2009. "Kid Gloves," the first single from the second album, was released on February 9, 2009.
Neil performs under the name ZZC. In the BBC's 'Radio 1 Rescores: Drive (curated by Zane Lowe)' project, his debut single, "To the Bone," was used. "The Myth" was Neil's first instrumental album released in 2017 under the ZZC moniker. On the 2019 Biffy Clyro soundtrack album Balance, Not Symmetry, two songs from an unreleased ZZC solo album, "Plead" and "Fever Dream" were released.
