Simon Brown, born in Clarendon, Jamaica, on August 15, 1963, is a former professional boxer.
Brown, nicknamed "Mantequilla" by his legendary handler Jose 'Pepe' Correa, was a two-weight world champion and regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound boxing champions and was regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in boxing at one time.
Professional boxing career
Brown began his career in 1982 at the age of 19 and went on a string of 21 victories before losing a split decision to Marlon Starling for the USBA welterweight title in 1985. Simon defeated Shawn O'Sullivan, an undefeated former Olympian, for a shot at Tyrone Trice's vacant IBF welterweight crown. Brown won via TKO in the 14th round and went on to successfully defend his title nine times, including one with Lineal/WBC welterweight champion Maurice Blocker, who took the top prize by TKO in the 10th. In his next fight against James McGirt, Brown lost his belts.
Brown came back to light-middleweight in 1993 and defeated Terry Norris via a dramatic 4th round KO to win the WBC light-middleweight championship in a battle that Ring Magazine named Upset of the Year. Brown lost a rematch and the WBC championship to Norris after a tumultuous defense of the WBC against Troy Waters in May 1994.
Brown defeated IBF light-middleweight champion Vincent Pettway in 1995. Brown was knocked down in round one by a Pettway right hand, and was knocked down by a Pettway right hand in round three. Brown opened low in round five and then went straight for Pettway before losing the ropes. The referee ruled a knockdown after seeing the low blow. Brown was knocked out by a Pettway left hook in round six. When not lying on his back unconscious, Brown continued to punch punches.
Brown lost a close ten round decision to former WBA welterweight champion Aaron Davis in his next fight.
Brown defeated undefeated WBO middleweight champion Lonnie Bradley in August 1996, a unanimous decision. Brown then met IBF middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins in January 1998, but was disqualified by TKO in round six. Brown's last title shot was supposed to be taken.
He went on a five-fight losing streak starting with losses to Hopkins in 2000, including defeats to Olympian David Reid and Omar Sheika, and then resigned after the loss to Sheika.
