Silvia Derbez Career

Life and career

Derbez was born in San Luis Potos, Mexico, and the niece of Mara de la Luz Amézquita and French-born businessman Marcel Derbez Gilly. She debuted in Mexican film as a teenager, appearing in her first film, "Girlfriend of the Sea," a 1947 film.

Allá en el Rancho Grande, a Mexican cinema masterpiece, appeared in 1948 (Out on the Big Ranch). Salón México, a classic cabaretera film noir, was in three other films before the decade of the 1940s came to an end.

During the 1950s, Derbez became a celebrity both nationally and internationally, during an era in which she made sixteen films. Derbez died from filming in 1951 to 1956, but she appeared in ten films from 1954 to 1956.

"Nora" in the 1958 soap opera, Derbez was signed by Televisa to appear "Nora" in the Mexican soap opera, Senda prohibida (Forbidden Way). Derbez played in 1959 in Elisa, another soap opera.

During the 1960s, Derbez appeared in seventeen telenovelas, many of which she appeared in. Maria Isabel I, where she appeared briefly in the title role, was one of the soap operas she appeared in during that decade. She returned to cinema in 1969, appearing in three movies between then and 1970.

Her television work slowed marginally in the 1970s. At the time, she made twelve telenovelas. Angelitos negros (Black Angels), a 1970s nanny, was one of the telenovelas in which she took part. She also appeared in El derecho de los hijos (Your Children's Rights) and La Recogida in 1971 (which loosely refers to The Picked Up Woman). El Andariego (The Walker), a 1975 film, starred El Andariego (The Walker).

As Derbez's career progressed, her work rate began to decline, and she appeared in only six telenovelas and four films during the 1980s. Eugenio González Salas, a publicist, died in 1986. Nevertheless, Derbez recovered from his personal loss and appeared in Simplemente Maria, one of Latin America's most popular telenovelas of all time, in 1989. Derbez's appearance in Simplemente Maria was a collaboration with Victoria Ruffo, who would become her daughter in law shortly. Simplemente Maria's 1989 version was particularly popular in countries such as Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Eugenio Derbez, Derbez's son, became well-known as a television comedian during the 1990s. He and Ruffo were married.

Derbez appeared in three films in the early 1990s, including 1993's Zapatos Viejos (Old Shoes), in which she appeared alongside singer Gloria Trevi. Derbez was in Prision e Amor (Prisoner of Love), and she appeared in "Milagros" in Lazos de Amor in 1994. The two soap operas became extremely popular among Hispanic viewers in the United States.

After the Prisionera de Amor and Lazos de Amor, Derbez returned to cinema playing in three films before returning to television as "Leonor" in Los hijos de nadie (Nobody's Children). In 1998, she appeared in another well-known Mexican telenovela, La usurpadora (The supplanter), which starred Gabriela Spanic. In 2001's version of Caridad Bravo Adams' La intrusa (The Intruder), she performed her last role as an actor.
