Sidney Godley Life

Sidney Frank Godley VC (14 August 1889 – 29 June 1957) was an English winner of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be given to British and Commonwealth forces.

He was the first private soldier to be rewarded with a VC in World War I.

Early life

Godley was born in East Grinstead, West Sussex, on August 14th, the son of Avis (née Newton) and Frank Godley. His mother died in 1896 and he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Willesden, London. He was educated at Henry Street School in St John's Wood, St John's Wood, and Sidcup National School, Sidcup. He worked in an ironmonger's store from the age of fourteen to twenty. On December 13, 1909, he joined The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) of the British Army as a private with service number 13814.

Post-war life

Godley married Ellen Eliza Norman on August 2nd, 1919. In Tower Hamlets, London, he served as a school caretaker. He died in Epping Hospital on June 29, 1957. In the town cemetery at Loughton, Essex, where he later resided, he was buried with full military honours.

He was depicted in Theo Barklem-Biggs' film Our World War (2014).
