Sidney Carroll Life

Sidney Carroll (May 25, 1913 – November 3, 1988) was an American film and television screenwriter.

Although Carroll wrote most for television, he is perhaps best known today for directing The Hustler (1961), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award and for A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966).

He has also received Emmys for the documentaries The Louvre (1978), China, and the Forbidden City (1963).

Carroll received an Edgar Award in 2005 for writing "The Fine Art of Murder," an ABC program Omnibus version.

He wrote the screenplays for the 1974 Richard Chamberlain television version of The Count of Monte Cristo, as well as the original story for Michael Caine's heist film Gambit.

He continued to write for television until 1986. Carroll is also known for a memorable tale called None Before Me, which Ray Bradbury wrote in the anthology Timeless Stories for Today and Tomorrow.

It tells of a lonely miser who is captivated by a lavish dollhouse.

Bradbury's book is an anthology of fantasy stories, and it's only in the last sentence that the tale shifts to fantasy, with rather startling results. June Carroll, a Broadway lyricist, was married to Carroll from 1940 to his death.

Jonathan Carroll, the father of award-winning novelist Jonathan Carroll, is the father of a young Jonathan Carroll.

In 1934, he graduated from Harvard University.
