Sherman Hemsley Life

Sherman Alexander Hemsley (February 1, 1938 – July 24, 2012) was an American actor best known for his appearances on CBS television series All in the Family and The Jeffersons, Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series Amen and B.P. Richfield on the ABC's Dinosaurs.

Hemsley was nominated for both a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award for his work on The Jeffersons.

He also received an NAACP Image Award.

Personal life

Hemsley, unlike the characters he played, was a shy and intensely private man, who some even described as reclusive. He avoided the limelight in Hollywood, but little of his personal life revealed anything about his marriage or that he had no children. Hemsley did grant a rare video interview to the Archive of American Television in 2003. "Playing George Jefferson] was painful for me, but the actor was the protagonist." "I had to do it" was something I was supposed to do."
