Shannon Tavarez Life

Shannon Skye Tavarez (January 20, 1999 – November 1, 2010) was an American child actor and singer.

In Walt Disney Theatrical's Broadway revival of The Lion King, she played young Nala.

Shannon Tavarez was Odiney Brown, a human resource manager and one of the daughters of a Dominican man with the surname "Tavarez."

She was a native and resident of Bellerose, New York, and she was an honors student at P.S. The Harlem School of the Arts selected 176 students to perform as young Nala after a cattle call audition at the Apollo Theater, and she became one of two girls who split the role, with each of the girls performing four shows per week.

Following being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, several months after making her September 2009 debut in The Lion King, she was forced to leave the show.

She had a great deal of difficulty in locating a match for a bone marrow transplant because of her African-American and Dominican ethnic origins.

Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and 50 Cent collected potential contributors from among their supporters to help her locate a bone marrow donor.

She was later able to find a partial bone marrow donor match after her old co-stars from The Lion King helped her raise money to help her mother pay for her medical bills.

She had an umbilical cord transplant (prior to which she'd been undergoing chemotherapy) because the doctors couldn't find a complete bone-marrow-donor match for her on November 1, 2010.

She was a patient at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York, at the time of her death.

The lights at the Minskoff Theatre, where The Lion King was performing, had been dimmed in her memory on the night that she died, and her funeral was held at Greater Allen A. M. E. Cathedral of New York. "Shannon's dream was to perform on stage," her mother (who founded Shannon's S.H.A.R.E Foundation a year after) said in a tweet shared following her death.
