Shannon Byrnes Career

Career

Byrnes was recruited from the Murray Bushrangers and was the last draftee selected by Geelong Football Club in the AFL rookie draft in 2002. He was given the number 46 but changed it to 17 at the start of the 2005 season. When Byrnes co-captained the Murray Bushrangers, he wore the #10 guernsey.

He was named on Geelong's senior list for the remainder of the 2004 season after breaking his leg against the West Coast Eagles in second year. In his first two years on the senior list, Byrnes was mostly off the bench, and he was named a rising star award in 2005 against the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco.

In 2006, the quick-left footer had an uneven season, with varying form and inability to break into a solid squad with him being put in and out of the playing squad. Byrnes' outstanding play at the VFL level in 2007 was enough to convince him that he made his way to the senior team at the right time of the season and was a member of the 2007 Premiership team, with 14 disposals and one goal.

He had a lackluster year in 2008 and was unable to qualify in the finals, his best year of his career to date, with 32 goals and 11 behinds. He secured a spot in the team after missing only two games due to injury, and was chosen to play in the 2009 AFL Grand Final, where he had 16 possessions, kicked one goal, and became a two-time premiership player. He had another good year in 2010 scoring 35 goals for the season.

In 2011, he only played five games in an injury-plagued year due to knee and calf injuries. He was selected as an emergency for the 2011 AFL Grand Final, but despite some injuries involving Steve Johnson, he was not called up to the final team.

On July 30, 2014, Byrnes announced his resignation, which would go into place immediately.
