Shalrie Jamal Joseph (born May 24, 1978) is a former Grenadian footballer who is currently the head coach of the Grenada national football team.
Playing career
Joseph was drafted fourteenth overall in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution but did not join the team until the 2003 season, having spent most of 2002 looking for a club overseas and then playing for the New York Freedom of USL D-3 Pro League. Joseph began to be one of the most versatile defensive midfielders in the league right away upon joining the Revolution. In 2005, he was selected to the MLS Best XI.
Joseph received a $1 million bid from Celtic F.C. in August 2006, but MLS turned down the bid. MLS rejected Celtic's second bid of $2 million in January 2007.
He got off and played the entire MLS All-Star Game against West Ham United in 2008. The All-stars won the game 3–2, putting them 5–0 against foreign teams for the first time.
He became the Revolution's captain in 2010 after previous captain Steve Ralston departed the Revolution to join AC St. Louis. Joseph took a leave of absence from the team in 2010 after being involved in the Major League Soccer substance abuse and behavioral health services. At the end of May, Joseph returned to the Revolution.
Joseph has been signed by the Revolution to a Designated Player deal for the 2012 season.
Joseph was traded to Chivas USA in exchange for Blair Gavin, a second round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, and allocation funds.
Joseph was traded to Seattle Sounders FC in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft and 2015 MLS SuperDraft, as well as a change in allocation order on February 19, 2013.
Joseph returned to the New England Revolution in April 2014.
Joseph signed up for play with Premier Development League side FC Boston on May 21, 2016.
Joseph was a member of the Grenada national team, for whom he has competed in the Caribbean Cup, the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and World Cup qualifiers.
