Shakira, Lady Caine (née Baksh, born 23 February 1947) is a Guyanese-British actress and fashion model, as well as the wife of English actor Sir Michael Caine.

Early life

Shakira was born in British Guiana (modern-day Guyana) on February 23rd 1947 to Muslim Indian parents. Her mother, a dressmaker, aspired to follow in her footsteps and become a fashion designer.

Personal life

Michael Caine became obsessed with finding the woman he found to be "the most beautiful... he had ever seen" after seeing Baksh in a British television commercial for Maxwell House coffee in 1971. He learned she lived just a few miles from him in London from a friend in the ad agency industry. The couple were married in Las Vegas on January 8, 1973, and they have one child, Natasha.

Baksh is a Muslim, though her husband is a Christian. In 2009, he said, "My wife is a Muslim and she does Muslim stuff; I'm a Christian; and no questions have come up." Muslims' media portrayal is different from mine, which is both benign and peaceful."

Modeling and acting career

She was urged by her employer to enter the Miss Guyana competition, in which she finished runner-up while working as a secretary. She came in third in the 1967 Miss World competition in London, where she decided to continue modeling as a child.

Baksh appeared in several films, including Some Girls Do (1969), Carry On Again Doctor (1969), Toomorrow (1970), and The Man Who Would Be King (1975). She appeared in two episodes of the science fiction television series UFO. In June 1970, Jo Grant, a Doctor Who companion, appeared as a character with third Doctor Jon Pertwee.
