Sergio Jerome Pettis (born August 18, 1993) is an American mixed martial artist currently signed with Bellator MMA, fighting in the Bantamweight division.

Pettis competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he competed in both the Bantamweight and Flyweight divisions before signing with Bellator.

Personal life

Sergio is Anthony and Rey Pettis' younger brother. Sergio graduated from Pius XI Catholic High School in Milwaukee, WI, in June 2012. Eugene Pettis, Jr., their father, was stabbed to death by a robber at a friend's house on November 23, 2003.

Mixed martial arts career

Pettis was promoted to a professional in September 10, 2011 against Kyle Vivian at the Canadian Fighting Championship 7. In the first round, he won by TKO.

Sergio faces Mike Lindquist at Madtown Throwdown 26 on January 7, 2012. In round one, he was deemed "independent" by submission.

At LFC 53, the Toscanoes defeated Tom McKenna. He was selected in the first round of the tournament.

Unleashed, Pettis then met Tony Zelinski at NAFC: Unleashed. He was crowned in the second round of the TKO.

At Colosseum of NAFC, Pettis faced Chris Haney. He was voted on by a unanimous vote.

Pettis beat Jimmy Jones by a majority decision in his next fight, RFA 4-Griffin vs. Escudero.

At Resurrection Battle Alliance 7, Pettis had expected to meet Matt Manzanares, but Manzanares was forced to cancel due to injury. Sergio's was unable to find another match, so the match was called off. Pettis is now face Josh Robinson at Battleground in NAFC: Battleground. Pettis' record soared to an unbeaten 7-0 win in unanimous decision.

Pettis will face UFC vet Jeff Curran in the inaugural RFA Flyweight Championship at RFA 8, 2013, inside the historic The Rave/Eagles Club Milwaukee, Wisc. Curran was forced out of the tournament due to personal reasons, but RFA President Ed Soares confirmed that Dillard Pegg would take his place and face Pettis for the flyweight title. He gained the RFA flyweight title after defeating him by KO in the first round.

At the Battle in the Ballroom on September 28, 2013, Pettis met James Porter for the NAFC Bantamweight Championship. Pettis was successful in the first round and was later signed by the United FC.

Pettis was supposed to make his promotional debut against Vaughan Lee in a bantamweight match on November 16, 2013, at UFC 167. Lee was forced out of the match due to injury and was replaced by Will Campuzano a week before. Pettis was voted unanimously into the fight.

Pettis was defeated by Alex Caceres at UFC on Fox 10 on January 25, 2014 in his second UFC match. In the third round, he lost the back-and-forth due to a back-naked choke submission late in the tournament. Despite the loss, Pettis received a Fight of the Night bonus award for the match.

On June 7, 2014, Pettis took on Yaotzin Meza at UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Khabilov. He won the fight by unanimous vote.

At UFC 181, Pettis met Matt Hobar on December 6, 2014. He won the fight by a unanimous vote. Pettis' second Fight of the Night bonus award was also earned during the tournament.

At UFC 185 on March 14, 2015, the Brits defeated Ryan Benoit in a flyweight match. Pettis was disqualified by left hook after winning the first round and Benoit finished with a flurry of ground and pound in the second round.

At UFC 192, Pettis defeated Chris Cariaso on October 3, 2015. He gained the fight by unanimous decision.

On April 23, 2016, Pettis defeated Chris Kelades of UFC 197. Pettis was voted unanimously on the issue. Sergio was dominating the majority of the discussions and defending takedowns by attacking the neck. He stunned Moraga many times and arguably won all three rounds. In his post-fight interview, Pettis called out Jussier Formiga.

At UFC Fight Night 96, Pettis was supposed to face Louis Smolka on October 1, 2016. However, Pettis pulled out of the fight early this week due to what his trainer described as "a minor injury" and was replaced by promotional newcomer Brandon Moreno.

On January 15, 2017, Pettis was supposed to face Jussier Formiga at UFC Fight Night 103. Formiga did not participate in the fight until late December, but John Moraga replaced him. He won the fight by a unanimous vote.

On May 13, 2017, Pettis was supposed to meet Henry Cejudo at UFC 211. However, Cejudo had to pull out of the match due to a hand injury on May 10, and the match was called off.

In the main event at UFC Fight Night 114, Pettis met Brandon Moreno on August 5, 2017. He was voted unanimously in the match.

On December 2, 2017, UFC 218 held a rescheduled match with Cejudo. Pettis was disqualified by a majority vote in the fight.

On June 9, 2018, Pettis met Joseph Benavidez at UFC 225. He won the back-and-forth war by a split vote.

At UFC 229. Pettis faced Jussier Formiga on October 6, 2018. Sergio was defeated by a unanimous decision following the event. After the match, Pettis head coach Duke Roufus revealed that Sergio is returning to the bantamweight division.

On December 15, 2018, Pettis took on Rob Font in a bantamweight brawl at UFC on Fox 31. He lost the fight by majority vote.

At UFC on ESPN 3, Pettis was supposed to face Ricardo Ramos on June 29, 2019. Pettis did not return to action on June 15, 2019, but it was announced that it had been delayed due to injury.

Pettis was supposed to face Alex Perez on September 21, 2019 at UFC on ESPN+ 17. However, Perez canceled the match on August 26 due to an illness, and Tyson Nam was brought to the ring. Pettis was defeated by a unanimous vote.

Pettis was due to face Kai Kara-France on December 14, 2019, at UFC 245. Pettis' contract with his previous battle with Nam was terminated later, and the free agency is testing out Pettis' services.

Pettis has signed a multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA, which was announced on October 24, 2019. Pettis made his Bellator 238 debut against Alfred Khashakyan on January 25, 2020. He was deemed victorious in the first round's scientific competition.

On July 24, Pettis met Ricky Bandejas at Bellator 242. He won the competition by a unanimous vote.

On May 7, 2021, Pettis met Juan Archuleta for the Bellator Bantamweight World Championship at Bellator 258. Pettis won the competition and the title by a majority vote.

Pettis made his first title defense against Kyoji Horiguchi on December 3, 2021, at Bellator 272. Pettis recovered from losing the first three rounds by knocking out in round four.

Pettis was set to face Raufeon Stots on April 23, 2022, in his first title defense and also in the first round of the $1 million Bellator Bantamweight World Grand Prix Tournament. However, Pettis was forced to withdraw from the competition and the Grand Prix after suffering an accident that needed surgery.
