Sergio Busquets Life

Sergio Busquets Burgos (Catalan: busk]: [busts]: [bus]: [bus]: [bus]: born 16 July 1988] is a Spanish professional footballer and captain who competes for both La Liga Barcelona and Spain's national team. He is widely regarded as one of the top defensive midfielders of all time, with short and slow passes, rare positioning, and his singular interpretation of the game.

He made his first appearance in Barcelona's first team in July 2008. Since then, he has played over 600 total appearances for the club, including 8 La Liga titles, 7 Copa del Rey titles, and three UEFA Champions Leagues. In 2008–09 and 2014–15, he was part of his squads that won a continental treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League.

Busquets made his senior international debut for Spain in April 2009 and has since made over 130 appearances for the national team. He helped the country win the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 tournaments, as well as numerous European Championships.

Personal life

Carles, Busquets' father, was also a footballer. During the 1990s, he played for Barcelona as a goalkeeper, but almost exclusively as a backup.

Busquets formed a friendship with Elena Galera in 2014. They had two sons born in 2016 and 2018. On his left forearm, he had an Arabic tattoo defacing "A thing for you, the life in my world" dedicated to his maternal grandfather, to whom he was very close.

Sergio Busquets Career

Club career

Busquets, born in Sabadell, Catalonia, started playing football for local team CD Badia del Vallès, then spells with CEF Barberà Andaluca, Lleida, and UFB Jàbac Terrassa before joining Barcelona's youth ranks in 2005. In his second season, he scored seven goals in 26 games for the Juvenil A team, and two years later, Busquets was promoted to the B team under Pep Guardiola, which helped them win promotion to the third division. He would make his first-team debut in the Copa Catalunya in the same season as a replacement.

On September 13, Busquets played his first La Liga game, a 90-minute match to Racing Santander in a 1–1 home draw. In the 83rd minute of Barcelona's 2–3 home loss against Shakhtar Donetsk, he scored his second goal in the 15th minute of a 5–0 group stage victory against Basel in 2010.

Busquets signed a contract extension until 2013 on December 22, 2008, with a buy-out clause of €80 million. In a 2–0 home victory over Athletic Bilbao on March 7, 2009, he scored his first league goal. Manuel Sanch and Manolo Sanch were among the three father-and-son pairing to triumph in Barcelona's top club competition, including Seydou Keita and Yaya Touré, on May 27. He appeared in Barcelona's starting eleven, defeating Madrid's 2–0 victory over Manchester United in Rome; with that triumph, he became Europe's third father-and-son team competing for the third time in Europe's top club competition, winning the Champions League final,

Busquets' fine form continued in the 2009–10 season, with Guardiola preferring him to Touré as Barcelona's central holding midfielder. He dropped to the ground after a dramatic victory over Inter Milan on the second leg of the Champions League semi-final 1–0 series (and a potential 2–3 aggregate loss) against Inter Milan on April 28, 2010. He came to push Busquets directly in the face. The former was given a red card and suspended for violent conduct as a result of his involvation, but both Motta and the media also chastised him for reportedly feigning injury.

Busquets was also very popular in 2010-2011, even playing as a center back on occasion. On January 27, 2011, he signed a deal extension that will keep him at the club until 2015 – the buyout clause was raised to €150 million. Barcelona won the game 3–1 on aggregate and 4–3 on aggregate on March 8, 2011, playing at center back in the season's Champions League round-of-16, leveling the score at 1–1. Busquets was fully supervised during his team's 3–1 Champions league final victory over Manchester United at the Wembley Stadium on May 28th.

Busquets scored a rare goal against Chelsea on April 24th, his sixth official one in four years, netting from a quick tap-in after an Isaac Cuenca cross to make it 1-1 for the hosts in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals against Chelsea. Barcelona went from being 0–2 down to losing 2–2 on aggregate after losing 1–0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

Busquets reached a new contract on July 16, the day he celebrated his 25th birthday, but the buyout clause remained unaltered. Following the retirement of longtime club captain and defender Carles Puyol and at the veteran's personal request, he was given the number 5 shirt for the forthcoming season and was named one of the club's four captains alongside Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, and Lionel Messi on August 1st.

Busquets got their fifth trophy in the league by beating Juventus 3–1 at Berlin's Olympiastadion on June 6th. This made Barcelona the first team in history to win the treble of domestic league, domestic cup, and European Cup twice, with Dani Alves, Busquets, Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Pedro, Gerard Piqué, and Xavi the only two players to do so.

Busquets captained Barcelona for the first time in the absence of regular captain Iniesta and vice-captain Messi in a 1–2 away loss to Sevilla on October 3, 2015.

Busquets opened the scoring in a 3–0 victory over Las Palmas on October 1, 2017, with the game being played behind closed doors at Camp Nou due to the ongoing Catalan independence referendum. Around a year later, he signed a new deal until June 2023, which raised his buyout price from €200 million to €500 million. In a 1–1 group stage home draw against Tottenham Hotspur on November 24, 2018 he played his 500th game for Barcelona against Atlético Madrid, his 100th Champions League appearance.

Busquets made his 600th appearance for Barcelona on Monday in a 4–0 victory over Granada at the Los Cármenes on January 9, 2021. Only his contemporaries, Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi, had played more games in the club's history. After Messi left for Paris Saint-Germain FC in August, he became team captain.

International career

Busquets earned his first cap for Spain's under 21 in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship qualification play-offs first-leg away match against Switzerland on October 11, 2008. He scored in the 17th minute of a 1–2 loss but they later became victorious 4–3 on aggregate. He played his first game for the Catalan representative team on December 28th, beginning with a 2–1 victory over Colombia at the Camp Nou on December 28th.

Busquets was called up to the senior squad for a friendly against England on February 11, 2009. After replacing David Silva, he was named as a replacement in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Turkey on March 28, 2009. He made his debut in the return match against Turkey on March 28, 2009, playing 16 minutes in a 2–1 victory in Istanbul. He appeared in his first senior tournament in the summer, assisting Spain in finishing third at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Busquets were chosen by boss Vicente del Bosque for the 2010 World Cup in the same region, assuming that the holding midfielder role naturalized Brazilian Marcos Senna, who had previously served in the conquest of UEFA Euro 2008. Save the last 30 minutes of the 0–1 group stage loss against Switzerland in Durban, he attended all of the tournament's games and minutes for the eventual world champions. He had the third highest pass success rate in the tournament, alongside his colleague Puyol, who had a 98% success rate.

Busquets played every minute as Spain claimed the title and was named in the Tournament's Team. He scored his first international goal in a 5–1 victory over Macedonia during Euro 2016's qualifying phase on September 8. In a 3–0 win over Belarus in Huelva on November 15, his second came during the same tournament on October 15th. He was chosen for the final tournament in France.

Busquets won his 100th match for Spain on October 9, 2017 in a 1–0 away win over Israel in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. He was eventually selected in Julen Loegui's squad for the finals in Russia.

Busquets captained the Spanish for the first time in a goalless friendly draw against Portugal on October 7, 2020, while Sergio Ramos was on the bench. He was called into Luis Enrique's 24-man squad for UEFA Euro 2020, the following May. He was rated captain in the absence of Ramos. He tested positive for COVID-19 eight days before Spain's first game, causing the entire squad to withdraw from their final warm-up match against Lithuania. He skipped the first two group games – both draws – before returning to the team for the third, in which he was named man of the match by UEFA for a 5–0 victory over Slovakia. Busquets was again named man of the match in his team's 5–3 extra time victory four days later in their round of 16 matches against Croatia. He hit the ground with Spain's first kick of the penalty shootout against Switzerland, but his team won.

Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the first goal of the game, was instrumental in the semifinal against France on October 10th, but Spain lost 2–1 after the match. Busquets received the Heard Award for his efforts in the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals.

Andres Iniesta played scrabble on a chess board... here's why the Spain and Barcelona legend will go down in history as the greatest of them all

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 8, 2024
A documentary was made about Andres Iniesta four years ago that perfectly encapsulated why he will always be remembered as the greatest player in Spain's long list of footballing legends.  'Andres Iniesta: The unexpected hero,' was the title, and the description was just as accurate. 'The story of a normal person, who does extraordinary things. Someone who pursues and achieves triumphs through taking care of the small details.' Quiet, shy and thoughtful, he kept out of the headlines and just went about his business. It's hard to really think of anyone having ever been so good at something, and yet staying so humble.

A number of stars have paid tribute to Iniesta, with the likes of Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique featuring in a social media video and Lionel Messi among those to send well wishes online.
