Sarah Kennedy Life

Sarah Mary Kennedy MBE, born 8 July 1950 in East Grinstead, Sussex, is a British television and radio broadcaster.

On BBC Radio 2, she hosted The Dawn Patrol, a daily morning radio show on BBC Radio 2 from 1993 to 2010. In the Queen's Birthday Honours 2005, Kennedy was named a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to broadcasting.

Personal life

Kennedy married a member of the armed forces and had two children in her twenties; the couple later divorced. Adrian McGlynn, a Weatherbys CEO who she referred to as her "much beloved," is her partner. He became a popular character in her show; the couple attended Desmond Morris' son's wedding, in which McGlynn was the best man. They live in Northamptonshire, but Kennedy also has an apartment in London's renovated school building.

Sarah Kennedy Career

Early life and career

Sarah Kennedy was born in Sussex. She was born in East Grinstead and was the granddaughter of a stockbroker and a nurse. She attended Copthorne Prep School and later became a drama tutor.

Media career

Kennedy began her broadcasting career in Singapore in 1973 and then moved to BBC Radio 2 in 1976, first as a newsreader and continuity announcer. She was on hand for the station's last closedown before it went to 24-hour broadcasting in January 1979. On Radio 2, she continued to host music shows, including holiday coverage for Family Favourites until 1983, with the BBC Radio Orchestra playing String Sound. She was also the president of the Horton Hospital, Oxfordshire, and she was also president of the hospital radio station "Radio Horton."

On Day by Day, Kennedy's first on-screen job was watching the news on Southern Television's Day by Day. She rose to fame in television as one of the hosts of the ITV light entertainment program Game for a Laugh from 1981 to 1984. She was also one of the staff behind the short-lived BBC current affairs program 60 Minutes, which ran from 1983 to 1984, and was the main host of many series of Busman's Holiday in the 1980s. She also co-hosted The Animals Roadshow (in the late 1980s) and Animal Country (in 1991) with zoologist Desmond Morris.

Kennedy returned to Radio 2 to host The Dawn Patrol, a weekday early morning program that appeared on Monday from January 1993 to August 2010. During 1993, it went from 5 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., where it remained until 8 January 2010. Kennedy was given a coveted Sony Gold Radio Award in 1995. On Radio 2, she had a regular following of around 4.5 million listeners. The morning radio show was extended from 5 am to 7 a.m. on January 11, 2010, due to Terry Wogan's departure from his breakfast show in December 2009 and his replacement Chris Evans' plans.

On September 3, it was announced that she would leave the show on September 3rd. Kennedy had been absent for several weeks and would not return to the show (as she recovers from broadcasting), before Evans' appearance was postponed in October. Lynn Parsons and Aled Jones hosted the program during this period. Vanessa Feltz took over the show's slot on January 17, 2011.

Charlotte's Friends is also published, as well as two collections of listener's stories, Terrible Twos (two editions) and Terrible Pets.

Career incidents and controversies

Kennedy has suffered with her health and has had to miss time from work. On August 13, 2007, her slurred speech during her show on Sunday attracted national attention, but she blamed a sore throat. She returned to work the following day as normal before taking a month off, allowing the display to be presented by colleagues Pete Mitchell, Alex Lester, Aled Jones, and Richard Allinson. Later, it was revealed that Kennedy was recovering from pneumonia. On September 10, she returned to work.

Although standing in for Terry Wogan on the breakfast show in 1999, she became concerned about a "bizarre" appearance. This included calling Ken Bruce a "old fool" and referring to the presenter of the day's "Pause For Thought" slot as "a stupid old prune." She attributed the incident to a lack of sleep the previous night and apologized to listeners the next day. She had been supposed to be on the line for Wogan but she was forced to take her place instead, and Bruce took her place.

After joking (in a segment about the benefits of wearing clear clothing in winter road conditions), she was reprimanded to pass over a black pedestrian because she "couldn't see him in the dark" in October 2007. The BBC later apologized for the remark. She had previously stated that "black men rule athletics because they are used to being pursued by lions."

On a show in July 2009, she was also "spoken to" by BBC bosses after she praised late Conservative politician Enoch Powell, who described Powell as "the best Prime Minister this country never had."

Kennedy was barred from driving for 22 months after collapsing into a stationary vehicle in May 2014. Kennedy drank four glasses of wine over several hours to reduce back pain but didn't know she was over the legal threshold, according to a study.
