Early life
Martins was born in Faro, Portugal's Algarve, and is of Cape Verdean descent. At the age of three, she moved to France. She studied ballet in her youth and was the first African descent first to perform in Lyon. She discovered that she would be unable to participate in the Paris Opera because the corps was supposed to look alike and there were no other black dancers. Rather, she was given her Baccalauréat with a theater option. After receiving a DEUG in law, she began studying at École de théâtre Les Enfants Terribles in Paris at the age 20. She earned her acting degree at the French National Academy of Dramatic Arts, which was highly selective. She learned English as a child by listening to U2 songs.
Career
Martins was recruited by Roger Planchon for a local production of Le Radeau de la Méduse at the Théâtre National Populaire in Villeurbanne, just shy of graduating from high school. She appeared in Le Costume (The Suit) at the Young Vic in London, as well as in a French-language version of David Mamet's Race.
In the French police series Police District, Martins' first television appearance was in 2001. She appeared in the film Pigalle la nuit as Fleur. Martins appeared on the French TV crime drama Détectives in the lead role of Nora Abadie while filming Death in Paradise.
In the segment Parc Monceau, the 17th arrondissement, she appeared in the film Paris, je t'aime (2006).
Martins will appear in the crime comedy-drama Death in Paradise, co-produced with France Télévisions, in April 2011. Martins' debut on both comedy and on British television was in this series. Martins had no expertise with being a police officer. On October 25, 2011, Death in Paradise debuted. On the fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie, Martins played Camille Bordey, a detective sergeant. Camille and other local cops support British Detective Inspector Richard Poole (played by Ben Miller in the first two series) in determining murders. Martins strained her Achilles tendon during a stunt for the first series episode. She has stated that during the production of Death in Paradise, she discovered that certain of her demeanors are distinctively French.
Inspector Poole was killed in the first episode, and Humphrey Goodman, another British Detective Inspector (played by Kris Marshall), was sent to replace him. Martins' last episode, "Until Death Do You Part," was the fourth episode of her fourth series "Until Death Do You Part"; her character was described as moving to Paris. "I've loved everything about the show," she says of her exit from the program. However, the only way to improve in life is to take risks, even if it means losing something you love or leaving a place that is familiar. She and Miller appeared in 2021 for a two-part series.
