Sani Abacha Career

Abacha was involved in all the military coups in Nigeria during his military career: In 1966, when he was still a second lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion in Kaduna, he took part in the July 1966 Nigerian counter-coup from the conceptual stage. He could well have been a participant in the Lagos or Abeokuta phases of the coup the previous January as well. In 1969, he fought during the Nigerian Civil War as a platoon and battalion commander. He later became commander of the 2nd Infantry Division in 1975. In 1983, Abacha was general officer commanding of the 2nd Mechanised Division, and was appointed a member of the Supreme Military Council.

In 1983, Abacha played a prominent role in the 1983 Nigerian coup d'état which brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power; and the 1985 Nigerian coup d'etat which removed Buhari and brought General Ibrahim Babangida to power. When General Ibrahim Babangida was named President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1985, Abacha was named Chief of Army Staff. He was later appointed Minister of Defence in 1990.

Wickes cashier who became corrupt Nigerian state governor and raked in up to £157million from the country's public funds to buy a private jet, boarding school fees for his children and a fleet of armoured Range Rovers is ordered to pay back £101million

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 24, 2023
During his tenure as Nigerian Delta State governor James Ibori, 64, defrauded some of the world's poorest residents out of up to £157 million in public funds, lying about government contracts and embezzling money. The former Wickes cashier spent millions on luxurious homes, a £12.6 million private jet, fees at some of the UK's most expensive boarding schools for his children, first-class travel, and exclusive hotels. He also purchased homes in Washington, D.C. and Texas. The crooked politician owned a £600,000 fleet of armoured Range Rovers, a £120,000 Bentley, and a £340,000 Mercedes Maybach that were sent directly to his lavish £3.2 million mansion in Johannesburg. He also owned a £2.2 million home in Hampstead - paid cash for in cash in 2001 - and a £311,000 townhouse in Dorset. Ibori immigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1980s, where he married and married Theresa Ibori, a Middlesex woman, in Nower Hill, Pinner, Middlesex. He worked as a cashier at a building materials store Wickes in Ruislip, Middlesex, earning around £5,000 per year.
