Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone had a coming together with Borussia Dortmund chief Sebastian Kehl on the touchline on Wednesday night as their respective sides did battle in the Champions League quarter-finals.  Atletico won the game 2-1, thanks to goals from  Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino in the first half, which gave the hosts a half-time ascendancy in front of their own fans at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium.  Sebastien Haller then made it a tense ending for the hosts after grabbing one back in the 81st minute, but Atletico held on to secure a potentially vital one-goal advantage headed to Germany.

PLAYER RATINGS: Antoine Griezmann is at his creative best and Samuel Lino earned his goal for Atletico... but which Borussia Dortmund star scored just 4 in Madrid

Atletico Madrid earned a 2-1 lead over Borussia Dortmund after surviving a late scare in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Diego Simeone's side had a dream start against their Bundesliga opponents with Rodrigo de Paul seizing on a loose pass from Ian Maatsen to give the hosts a fourth minute lead.  A rattled Dortmund were punished for another defensive error after a mix-up between Mats Hummels and Nico Sclotterbeck, with Samuel Lino finishing after a fine Antonie Griezmann pass.

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: Hosts claim first-leg lead in Champions League quarter-final tie after Rodrigo de Pau and Samuel Lino punish gaffes... but Sebastien Haller grabs late lifeline for German side

ATLETICO MADRID 2-1 BORUSSIA DORTMUND - JACK GAUGHAN AT THE ESTADIO CIVITAS METROPOLITANO: Maybe not the high drama of across town 24 hours earlier but nobody really will have expected, after half an hour, that Borussia Dortmund would leave here fancying the semi-finals next week. For so long they had worn the puzzled looks of a team taken aback by Atletico Madrid's style, one that has never changed under Diego Simeone and one Edin Terzic warned about before this first leg. There was no element of surprise for anybody - except Terzic's players. The Germans - only fifth in the Bundesliga - gifted two goals, seemingly scared of what lay in wait around the corner in a first half during which they cowed. The crowd barely stopped for breath, a hot cauldron that Dortmund struggled to temper until much later.

After a dramatic victory is secured by Marko Arnautovic's strike, Inter Milan has a 1-0 advantage over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of Champions League last-16 fixtures

PETE JENSON: He wanted three attempts to get Inter Milan a slim advantage over Atletico Madrid in their Champions League last-16 first leg. He made no mistake when chance knocked for the third time. Reinildo Mandava lost possession just inside his own half. Martinez slowed down and fired goalwards. Oblak saved well, but Arnautovic beat him to Arnautovic, and this time he scored for all that Samuel Lino had to scramble his shot away on the goal line.

Real Madrid were not at their best against Valencia on Wednesday, but they managed to navigate their way into what was a trying fixture; Samuel Lino's attempt early in the second period knocked out a penalty from Karim Benzema, which culminated in extra time and then penalties.

During the Champions League final for AC Milan, Gennaro Gattuso bizarrely claimed to see the VIRGIN MARY

The physical midfielder was playing for the Italian team in the European showpiece (second left) when they went 3-0 up but then succumbed to a second-half comeback from the Reds before losing on penalties. And Valencian boss Gattuso (inset), speaking after his side's 5-1 victory over Getafe on Sunday in an interview published by Marca, despite Milan's loss, he still remembered Jesus' mother (right). I'm a bit ill.' I'm a bit yucky.' We've lost a goal, we've missed some passes, and Ilaix (Moriba) was given a warning. We must all play 100 minutes at our best, concentrated level. We were 3-0 upbeat against Liverpool in the Champions League final, but I didn't know the Virgin Mary in person. You should play with reverence and always be at your best in football,' he says.'

Atletico Madrid, Barcelona's feared, is trying to prevent Barcelona from permanently retaining Antoine Griezmann

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 23, 2022
According to Barcelona, Simeone is being asked by Atletico Madrid to use Antoine Griezmann sparingly, so that the club does not have to buy him outright at the end of the season. Griezmann reconnected Atletico Madrid on a first two-year loan agreement last summer, with Atletico having a right to buy him in 2023 if such conditions are fulfilled. Barcelona fears that if the Frenchman plays 50% of the games they are able to attend, they will have to pay a €40 million (£33.8 million) transfer fee.
