ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: Love is the drug that really felled tragic Amy Winehouse

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 14, 2024
Back To Black, the Amy Winehouse biopic, has been released to a cacophony of criticism. You can take your pick of the objections. Marisa Abela doesn't sing as well as Amy (of course she doesn't); the portrayal of Amy's junkie husband Blake Fielder-Civil is too kind; her cab driver father Mitch is too likeable - and so it goes on with everyone having their tuppence worth of memory. I saw an early screening and very much enjoyed the film, especially Marisa's touching performance as Amy, once described as a 'North London Jewish girl with tons of attitude'.

Back to Black film: Does Marisa Abela sing her own songs in the Amy Winehouse biopic?

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 12, 2024
The Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black hit cinemas on Friday with Marisa Abela in the titular role and Sam Taylor-Johnson directing. Amy died in 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning. Her second and last album Back To Black was the best-selling UK album of the 21st century for years. The star's biggest songs feature in the film as well as lesser-known tracks from her debut album Frank. Amid the film's poor reviews , viewers have been taken aback by Marisa's eerily Amy-like vocals and are asking: is Marisa really the one singing? The answer is...yes.

Back To Black review: This Amy Winehouse biopic shies away from the ugly stuff so thoroughly it looks like a perfume ad, writes PETER HOSKIN

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 11, 2024
'I get all I need from the Daily Mail,' says the saintly Blake Fielder-Civil in Back To Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson's new biopic of that most talented, most troubled of singers, Amy Winehouse. It's the wisest choice in a film that makes a hundred bad ones, among them its decision to portray Fielder-Civil - Winehouse's, let's say, controversial ex- husband - as saintly in the first place.  Here, as played by the overly buff Jack O'Connell, he's a kind of winsome, toe-tapping Jack the Lad who's only incidentally involved in his wife's descent into addiction.

Amy Winehouse's friends slam Back To Black director Sam Taylor-Johnson for 'glamourising' the late singer's husband Blake Fielder-Civil: 'They made him look like a Disney prince'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 9, 2024
Director of the new Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black Sam Taylor-Johnson has been lambasted by friends of the late singer for glamourising her tearaway husband Blake Fielder-Civil. The highly anticipated new movie premiered in London on Monday night, with Ms Winehouse's family present for the first showing of the blockbuster which stars striking Marisa Abela as the troubled songstress. But some who saw the film were stunned by the lack of criticism of Fielder-Civil, 44, who himself admitted that he first introduced the singer into the world of Class A drug abuse which would cause her such harm.

Back to Black review: Amy Winehouse biopic breaks its promise to celebrate her music and the result is Saturday-night impersonation

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 9, 2024
Peter Hoskin REVIEW: Remember Stars in Their Eyes? The telly show with Matthew Kelly? There's more than just a touch of Stars in Their Eyes about Back to Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson's new biopic of that most talented, most troubled of singers, Amy Winehouse . 'Tonight, Matthew,' its lead actress, Marisa Abela , seems to say, 'I'm going to be Amy Winehouse.' The same uplifted hairdo. The same lip piercing and tattoos. The same London drawl and jazzy singing voice.

Author CUT Mark Ronson, who was behind Amy Winehouse's biggest chart hits, including Rehab and Back To Black, was recalled in EMILY PRESCOTT's biography

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 31, 2024
EMILY PRESCOTT: Mark Ronson has been left out of the picture by the makers of a recent film about Amy Winehouse's life. Jeff Tunke, the Canadian actor who played Ronson in the forthcoming Back To Black biopic, told me: 'I had to wear his jacket and work with director Sam Taylor-Johnson, which was lovely.' Nevertheless, all of his scenes were cut, and his name was deleted from the film's credits on film website IMDb. Amy had a close but turbulent relationship with the producer and DJ, who collaborated on classic tracks such as Rehab and Back To Black, which gives the film its name. He had his own hit with Uptown Funk and wrote the Barbie soundtrack.

At the Critics' Choice Awards, Amy Winehouse's friend Mark Ronson DEFENDS the controversial biopic Back to Black, as he praises director Sam Taylor-Johnson for capturing the late singer's 'whip-smart humor.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 15, 2024
The music producer, 48, who worked with the beloved British singer up until her death in July 2011, says he read the script when he picked up the gong for Best Song at Sunday night's Critics' Choice Awards. Prior to its unveiling, the film has sparked skepticism, with many accusing the initiative of "exploiting the singer's legacy" and "capitalizing off her trauma." Sam Taylor-Johnson, Ronson, wrote: "I know Sam well and I read the script and I think it did a good job." I think she had this whip-smart razor sense of hum, one of her many gifts, and they were really nice in the film. I'm looking forward to seeing it.'

JAN MOIR: The judge was correct about the snowflakes. We've turned into a nation of whiny milksops

JAN MOIR: A judge has said children must not be brought up as coddled snowflakes, unable to walk across a street themselves - but is it already too late for all that? Judge Rupert Lowe was speaking out after finding out how a divorced father refused to let his children (ages eight and nine) walk 100 meters from his vehicle to their mother's house in Gloucester. Rather, Extra-Careful Dad broke a restraining order by bringing the precious little darlings within 30 meters of their mother's front door.

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 11, 2024
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson has revealed the biggest obstacle along the way to create the film, as the release date for the controversial new Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black nears. There's no mistaking the singer's emetic appearance, sweeping thick eyeliner, and individual tattoos, and finding someone to play Amy was undoubtedly the most difficult challenge. Mitch Winehouse, the actor's father, who plays Eddie Marsan, sparked controversy when it was revealed that he is endorsing the film, which has been criticized for 'ghoulish' portrayals of the actor's heroin use and also filming her funeral.

DEN NIGHORS: The victory of Neighbours as plans for the arena at William's polo club were canceled

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 9, 2023
DEN CONFIDENTIAL: Princes William (left) and Harry, as well as actress Elle 'the Body' Macpherson, have all played chukkas at London's last remaining polo ground. But now, the divots are flying at the exclusive Ham Polo Club (right), after the proposal to build a new all-weather stadium to encourage the royal sport to be played during the winter was rejected by planners. It came as a result of a backlash from its well-heeled neighbors, including Lady Annabel Goldsmith (inset), the socialite mother of Tory minister Lord Goldsmith who influenced the name of Annabel's nightclub in Mayfair. More than 200 protesters protested the proposal, fearing that it would have a disastrous effect on the Thames' banks, within sight of the Grade I-listed Ham House, where films including The Young Victoria were shot. The development of a 5ft close board fence in the nascent all-weather arena was largely responsible for the scheme, so interrupting views. For a winter version of polo, which is similar to indoor football, where players bounce a leather ball off the boundary as part of the game, the fence is needed.
