Sally Phillips, 54, (left and right) told how she needed a locksmith to break into the carer's accommodation after becoming concerned for her well-being only to discover she had 'done a runner,' stealing several items that did not belong to her. Sally says her son Olly (left), who also has Down's Syndrome, 'is in a bad way' after his carer's sudden departure, saying he finds 'transitions traumatic' and is pushing for the carer to be given a criminal record to prevent them from working with vulnerable children and adults in the future. 'Black Bridget Jones' Queenie hailed as 'grittier and raunchier' than Helen Fielding's tale as critics rave over rising star Dionne Brown's 'charming' performance as a heartbroken woman in new Channel 4 drama
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 5, 2024
The Channel 4 show, which is set in Brixton, South London, has left critics and viewers in awe at Dionne Brown's 'beautifully rendered' performance. The eight-part series, an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams's bestselling novel about the 25-year-old south Londoner, has impressed critics almost across the board - with a few exceptions - while viewers have been left waiting hungrily for the next episodes after the first two instalments premiered on Tuesday night.
CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews last night's TV: You'll be rooting for this modern-day Austen heroine to find Mr Right
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 4, 2024
The heroine of Queenie, played by Dionne Brown, fits the same mould exactly as.the heroine of any Austen novel, especially my favourites, Mansfield Park and Emma. Look past the South London setting, and this eight-part romantic comedy (staying close to its source, the 2019 bestseller by Candice Carty-Williams) is a direct descendant. None of Miss Austen's novels begins with a gynaecological examination, it must be said. But most of them feature key scenes at dances - and Queenie does too, if you can describe shouting and waving your arms about in a nightclub as 'dancing'.
Bridget Jones and Alan Partridge star Sally Phillips tells of 'upset' after her son, 19, who has Down's syndrome was refused access to a trampoline park with his friends 'because he needed a doctor's note'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
March 29, 2024
Actress Sally Phillips has expressed disappointment that her son, who has Down's syndrome, was denied access to a trampoline park. This week, the comedian, 53, who is best known for creating and starring in sketch show Smack The Pony, as well as her appearance in Bridget Jones' Diary's Shazza, revealed that her child Olly was not allowed to play at Oxygen Acton in London. According to Phillips, the company refused to admit him because someone with Down's syndrome needs a letter from the GP. 'Olly is used to doing what his contemporaries (do)... so we went with his younger brother and younger brother's acquaintance, and older brother's acquaintance, and hundreds of times before, and the lady on the desk says, 'oh, can I have a word?' And called the boss over... I was so angry for Olly to be prevented.' They're weeding out people with visible impairments,' she said, and "you're not expected to bring in a doctor's letter."

PATRICK MARMION: We live in a world where stage and screen travesties of great books abound. It's not just about Dickens' complete works, but the entire 19th century, to be fair to Bleak Expectations, Mark Evans' stage spin-off of Mark Evans' Radio 4 comedy film series. Photofit Dickensian hero Pip, the eldest son of the 'Bin' family, has fallen on hard times and must undertake a character-building odyssey through Victorian society, from its schools, law courts, prisons and churches, before he strikes it rich by inventing a trash can (geddit? What We Know About "Queenie," the narrator's native version of "Queenie."

There are a few nostalgic moments that can be used to sum up lockdown: banana bread, home workouts with Joe Wicks, and Candice Carty-Williams' book, "Queenie" are all examples that could be used to sum up lockdown. Despite being published in 2019, the book gained a lot of traction during the pandemic, when people were looking for a way out of the morbid Covid charts and the four walls of their houses.
As it's become known, the book made its way to TikTok – or "booktok" – where it was dubbed readers' "highlight" of the year. The book addressed racial inequity in daily life, from coworkers, online dating, and even well-intentioned friends.

Menopause The change had an effect on Britain's most beloved celebrities
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 24, 2022
Any number of life-changing signs, ranging from brain fog and forgetfulness to crippling depression, can be attributed to decreased hormone levels. For several middle-aged women, these will make working life difficult and put a strain on their marriages. However, the 'change', as it is colloquially understood, can also provide them with an opportunity to assess their personal lives and pursue new interests, without being forced to rely on early adulthood's chains. Boots brought together six well-known TV presenters, comedians, actors, and fashion designers to discuss how the menopause had an effect on them.

PLATELL'S PEOPLE: What value do the Sussexes have if they can't be nasty about the royals?
www.dailymail.co.uk,

PEOPLE'S PEOPLE: Prince Harry's rotten few weeks have been! First, he was desperate to be at his grandmother's bedside before she died, after wasting precious time trying to get Meghan on the plane to Balmoral. Then there was the way she learned of her father's death while frantically trying to reach him just five minutes before it was announced to the world. (No one can deny that Harry was a loving and much loved grandchild, whatever his faults were). After that, we saw him frantically trying to postpone the publication of his warts-and-all book about the reportedly tragic and racial Royal Family, perhaps fearing that doing so would reflect poorly on him and Meghan.
