Sally Phillips Life

Sally Elizabeth Phillips (born 10 May 1969) is an English actor, television presenter, and comedian.

She co-created and was one of the writers of sketch comedy film Smack the Pony.

She is also known for her role in Miranda as Tilly, I'm Alan Partridge as Sophie, Parents as Jenny Pope, and Set the Fire as Colette in 2015.

Phillips appeared in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as Mrs Bennet, and the role of Sharon in all three Bridget Jones films. Phillips has appeared on BBC Radio 4's comedy show Clare in the Community since 2004.

She has been curator of The Museum of Curiosity on the Radio 4 comedy program of that name since 2018. She was named in 2019 by Vogue's "Sexy Woman Alive" competition, with her nomination receiving more than 80% of all votes received by readers.

Early life

Phillips was born in Hong Kong, which at the time was under British rule; her father, Tim, later chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, was an executive with British Airways. She grew up in the Far East, Middle East, Italy, and Australia following her father's work. She was sent to Wycombe Abbey School, where she studied for both O-Levels and A-Levels at the age of 13.

At New College, Oxford, she later studied Italian and linguistics. Although she was there, she remained a member of the Oxford Revue, playing mostly male roles alongside colleagues, Stewart Lee and Richard Herring (who went on to host their own television show, Fist of Fun, in which Phillips appeared as "the one who smells of Spam"). She co-wrote and performed Benadetta, the Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, based on a true legend. She appeared in the 1990 Oxford Revue THRASH, which also starred Ed Smith.

Phillips planned to write a PhD on the Spaghetti Western but had to cancel and focus on drama with the Théâtre de Complicité after graduating with a first-class degree.

Personal life

Phillips related of being hospitalized from salmonella disease in 2002 on a charity trip to Mexico, when speaking on the panel show QI in 2020. The disease caused a brain infection that made her body "microbrewery," which causes neurological problems, according to her. Her recovery took months. She appeared on Mel Giedroyc's Unforgivenable TV show in March 2022 and addressed her two-year friendship with Richard Herring in her early 20s.

Phillips is a Christian. She was married to Andrew Bermejo for 14 years and has three sons from their union, one with Down's syndrome. The couple split in 2017.

Phillips is a patron of Blue Apple Theatre (Hampshire, United Kingdom), which specialises in producing performance pieces for adults with a learning disability.

Phillips appeared at nine consecutive Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, including Ra-Rasputin, Arthur Smith's interpretation of Hamlet (as Ophelia), and Cluub Zarathustra with Simon Munnery, Stewart Lee, Richard Thomas, Julian Barratt, and Lori Lixenburg. Mel Smith's first television appearance was in Lee and Herring's Fist of Fun in 1994, followed by a cameo in Alas Smith and Jones. Phillips appeared as a reporter in Chris Morris's unbroadcast pilot of Brass Eye in 1995, but she did not appear in the series itself. Six Pairs Of Pants actor Paul McCauley created a number of regular sketches that developed as the series progressed. Jessica Hynes, Simon Pegg, Neil Mullarkey, Katy Carmichael, and Simon Schatzberger appeared on the show as well as Phillips, and Pegg, Hynes, Mullarkey, Mullarkey, and Simon Schatzberger wrote in part by Pegg, Hynes, Mullarkey, and Phillips. In 2001, she appeared in the David Nicholls film Rescue Me for BBC1. She appeared in Mean Machine, Birthday Girl, and Born Romantic, as well as wrote episodes for the animation Bob and Margaret.

She was named as one of the top 50 funniest acts in British comedy by The Observer in 2003. She appeared in Bridget Jones' Diary as Shazza after having previously auditioned for Bridget; the role was based on the film's director, Sharon Maguire.

Clare in the Community, a BBC radio sitcom, premiered in 2004, but it was over after 74 episodes in 2019. In Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest at the Oxford Playhouse in August 2005, she returned to the stage after a long absence. Phillips played Holly in the second series of Green Wing, and his appearance jeopardizes Mac (Julian Rhind-Tutt) and Caroline (Tamsin Greig)'s blossoming friendship. Natasha "Tash" Vine, a scatterbrained New Ager, appeared on BBC's comedy Jam & Jerusalem from 2006 to 2009.

Phillips played Tilly in Miranda as Miranda Hart's eccentric upper-class friend. Phillips was a part of the show from 2009 to 2015.

Phillips' film Fag Mountain was a winner of the British Film Council's screenwriting competition in 2009. The Decoy Bride, the author's first feature film script, debuted in spring 2010. Phillips appeared in a supporting role in the film, portraying Emma, a Hollywood assistant. The film was released in February 2012, premiering first on cable television and as a digital download, and then limited theatrical release.

In December 2010, she appeared in the BBC1 drama Accidental Farmer.
