Sadiq Khan is closing in on victory today as allies boasted that he has 'done better than anyone could have expected'. Local election results 2024: Could Sadiq Khan REALLY lose in London? Labour insiders panic over surge by Tory Susan Hall amid ULEZ and Gaza backlash - but Keir Starmer says he is 'confident' the mayor will hold on

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 4, 2024
Votes are being counted in the capital with Sadiq Khan's allies on high alert for Tory candidate Susan Hall to pull off a shock upset. Polls in the run up to the ballot on Thursday had shown Mr Khan with a comfortable lead of between 10 and 22 points. However, jitters started spreading through Labour circles yesterday amid rumours of a spike in turnout in outer London - typically dominated by Conservative voters and where anger about the ULEZ expansion has been most fierce. Supporters of Mr Khan are worried that he could have been damaged by a wider trend of Muslim voters shunning Labour over Keir Starmer 's strong support for Israel . However, on a visit to Mansfield this morning Sir Keir insisted he is 'confident' that Mr Khan can keep control of City Hall.

Judgement day for Sadiq: London's mayoral election is on a knife edge Labour insiders claims - with bookies slashing odds on shock defeat for Khan as Tories close the gap in a tight race

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 4, 2024
Labour insiders have claimed that the mayoral election for London is on a knife edge, as bookies have slashed their odds on a shock defeat for Sadiq Khan.  One party source told the Telegraph that Khan's race for the role against the Tories' Susan Hall was 'definitely going to be close', adding that there may be just a few points between the two. Another told the newspaper that the slim difference between the two candidates shows Labour that it needs to rethink its strategies and policies in London, amid massive controversies over ULEZ, among other contentious issues.

Rishi election nightmare continues: Tories lose control of more true-blue councils

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
Earlier today, the Prime Minister suffered the indignity of seeing of seeing a Labour mayor win in his own constituency as the party hemorrhaged councils and seats. The Conservatives lost Gloucester, which they had previously held for 20 years, and Dorset to the Liberal Democrats . Lord Ben Houchen's re-election on Teesside was a crumb of comfort as the party lost more than half of its councillors up for re-election across England, just months away from a general election. Labour's David Skaith became the inaugural elected mayor of York and North Yorkshire this afternoon, a new position that covers the Prime Minister's Richmond constituency. It was one of the final blows in a day of reverses for the ruling party, including in many areas the Tories need to win to have any chance in the general election later this year. All eyes now turn to mayoral contests in London and the West Midlands, the results of which will be declared on Saturday.

What are the key results yet to be announced in local elections? All eyes on Susan Hall to see if she can produce an upset and beat Sadiq Khan in London tomorrow with Andy Street expected to cling on in the West Midlands

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
All Tory eyes will be on Susan Hall to see if she can pull off an upset in London and oust Labour incumbent Sadiq Khan in a result expected to be announced on Saturday afternoon. Polls have give Mr Khan a significant lead over his Tory challenger Hall despite a backlash on crime and policing issues. A final survey for Savanta yesterday indicated the gap was 10 points, while YouGov has put it as wide as 22 points. However, many at Westminster expect the final result to be closer, as happened at the last elections three years ago.

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
Polls ahead of the election yesterday suggested that Sadiq Khan was on track for a comfortable victory over Tory rival Susan Hall. The final surveys gave him a lead of between 10 and 22 points. But rumours have been circulating today that it could be significantly closer, with senior figures pointing to the impact of Gaza on other results across England. Verification of the votes is happening now, with turnout numbers due later and the count tomorrow.

Tories face bruising night: Labour win Hartlepool and Thurrock while Rishi's Conservatives LOSE control of North East Lincolnshire and Reform threaten other seats as local election results pour in

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
Tories are facing a night of turmoil as results pour in from local elections across the country. Labour are boasting of being 'on track' for power at Westminster after making gains in key council contests. Sir Keir Starmer 's party won in Hartlepool and made another gain in Thurrock as they enjoyed early success. They also retained their majority in Sunderland by winning 18 out of the 25 seats being contested. The Tories lost control of North East Lincolnshire in what was shaping up to be a dire set of results for PM Rishi Sunak. As well as the Tory-Labour fight, the performance of insurgent outfit Reform UK is also being keenly scrutinised throughout the night. Reform beat the Tories in 16 out of the 25 seats in Sunderland, with leader Richard Tice crowing they were 'becoming the real opposition to Labour in Red Wall areas'. The results from the 107 local authorities in England who held elections on Thursday could yet decide Mr Sunak's 's political fate. The PM is also braced for dismal results from mayoral contests and a parliamentary by-election.

Polls CLOSE in crunch local elections: Rishi Sunak holds his breath after millions of Britons cast their vote - with Tory rebels circling the PM amid predictions the party could suffer a council and mayoral bloodbath

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
Polls have closed tonight in local elections that could decide Rishi Sunak 's fate - as well as being a final test of voter opinion ahead of the looming Westminster contest. The Prime Minister - and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer - will be nervously awaiting the results of council elections across 107 local authorities in England. Voting also took place from 7am on Thursday in 11 mayoral contests, 37 police and crime commissioner elections, and a parliamentary by-election in Blackpool South. Tories fear they could lose up to half of the council seats they are defending. Mayoral battles in Tees Valley and the West Midlands will also be a key barometer of Conservative and Labour fortunes ahead of the general election. In London , Labour mayor Sadiq Khan is expected to win an historic third term in City Hall despite a challenge by Tory rival Susan Hall over ULEZ and crime rates. The Conservatives are predicted to lose to Labour in Blackpool South, which would be the seventh Westminster by-election the party has lost with Mr Sunak as PM. There are some concerns in Tory ranks that the party might even finish third behind Reform UK, the Nigel Farage-backed outfit, in the Lancashire seat. Conservative rebels are poised to pounce on a dismal night for Mr Sunak by mounting a fresh effort to oust the PM from No10 in the coming days. Sir Keir will be hoping for a strong performance from Labour - particularly in key 'Red Wall' areas - to show they are on track for power at Westminster. The first council election results are expected shortly after midnight, while the mayoral results aren't due to be announced until Friday afternoon. The Blackpool South declaration should come in the early hours of Friday morning.

Will the local elections spell turmoil for the Tories - or could they be TERMINAL? As the polls close, punters place their bets on the results

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
As the polls closed at 10pm on Thursday night, odds of the Conservative party losing 500 or more seats were at 45 per cent on the Betfair Exhange. Forecasts suggest the Tories could lose up to half of the council seats they are defending in England, with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt saying the party expects to suffer 'significant losses'. But while the party is braced for another bruising, punters are predicting the election results may not be as bad as feared. Odds of a wipe out of 750 or more seats were at a distant  five per cent on the Betfair Exchange as voting finished tonight.

Sadiq Khan and Tory rival Susan Hall cast their votes in London mayor election - as she warns contest is 'last chance' to put someone who will 'get a grip on crime' in City Hall

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
Sadiq Khan, who is hoping for a third term, took his dog along as he cast his ballot alongside wife Saadiya this morning. Meanwhile, Susan Hall went to a polling station in Hatch End, as she warned Londoners it is their 'last chance to vote for a Mayor who will get a grip on crime and make people safe' and scrap ULEZ. Polls have give Mr Khan a significant lead over his Tory challenger Hall despite a backlash on crime and policing issues.

Lawless London claims its latest victim: Fury as beloved teacher's son, 14, is killed during sword rampage while he was wearing his headphones - as Sadiq Khan is blasted for failing to get a grip on violent crime

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
Daniel Anjorin was killed just moments after leaving his house when he was attacked in a sword rampage in Hainault that saw four other people, including two police officers, seriously wounded. The private school pupil, whose mother is a science teacher, had been wearing his headphones when he was allegedly murdered by Brazilian-Spanish national Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo. While Daniel's heartbroken family mourn the loss of their 'wonderful child', there is mounting anger at the death - and at the apparent failure of Sadiq Khan for 'failing on knife crime' in the capital. Home Secretary James Cleverly was among those slamming the Mayor's perceived failures on the eve of a string of local elections across England and Wales, including for City Hall. Mr Khan is also facing calls to look at equipping every front-line officer with a Taser, after two constables received significant injuries during the rampage on Tuesday morning.

Labour's Wes Streeting sparks furious backlash after making incendiary claim that a win for the Tories in the London mayoral election is 'a win for racists, white supremacists and Islamophobes the world over'

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
On the eve of polling day, Wes Streeting accused Conservative candidate Susan Hall of campaigning 'from the gutter' with 'dangerous and divisive politics'. The Shadow Health Secretary wrote on social media: 'A win for Susan Hall and the Conservatives is a win for racists, white supremacists and Islamophobes the world over. 'Susan Hall's campaign has been fought from the gutter with dangerous and divisive politics. London, we cannot let her win.' He did not provide any evidence for his incendiary claims but included a link to a story about Lee Anderson, who was suspended from the Conservatives for saying that Islamists controlled Labour mayor Sadiq Khan .

Could knife crime epidemic hit Sadiq Khan's re-election? Poll shows London mayor's election lead over Tory Susan Hall narrowing in the wake of sword frenzy that left teen, 14, dead

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
The incumbent mayor saw his poll lead over the Tories cut to the smallest of the campaign in the wake of the sword carnage in Hainault that left a teenager dead and a police woman maimed. He is still 10 points ahead of Susan Hall with a day to go, but the lead in a poll by Savanta for the Evening Standard is a far cry from polls at the start of the race for City Hall which gave him a 25-point advantage. Mr Khan saw savaged by Cabinet minister Kemi Badenoch today for mocking Ms Hall's knife crime worries last week, just days before the latest bloodshed. Last week he told her to stop watching The Wire, the bleak cult US drama about police and drug crime in Baltimore.

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
Sadiq Khan is being backed by Luke Skywalker ahead of tomorrow's London mayoral election - with actor Mark Hamill urging voters to support the Labour politician. The Hollywood star claimed a vote for Mr Khan was a vote 'for a fairer, safer & greener London' in a post to his millions of social media followers. The 72-year-old, best known for playing Skywalker - a Jedi - in the Star Wars films, hailed the incumbent mayor as a 'driving force in cleaning up London's air'. Hamill also spoke of how he lived in the capital 'for years' while filming, with his first child Nathan born in St John's Wood. Mr Khan is bidding for an historic third term as London mayor at Thursday's mayoral election. A final Savanta survey showed Mr Khan leading Tory rival Susan Hall by 10 percentage points ahead of polling stations opening tomorrow morning. The Labour mayor's re-election bid has been dogged by continuing anger at his expansion of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to all boroughs. Ms Hall has claimed that Mr Khan is plotting new 'pay-per-mile' charges for London drivers if he wins a new term, although he has strenuously denied this.

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
During a debate on LBC on April 23 Mr Khan was challenged by Conservative candidate Susan Hall who said there were 'gangs running around with machetes' in London. Mr Khan replied: 'I say in a respectful way, I think the Tory candidate should stop watching The Wire. We're not living in Baltimore, USA, in the noughties.

Police federation issues fresh call for more Tasers after officers who first responded to terrifying Hainault sword attack in London 'were not equipped with the devices'

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
Around 7,500 of the Met's 34,000 police officers are trained to use the electronic devices. But the incident yesterday, in which two police officers were wounded in the samurai-sword attack, has led to fresh calls for an increase in taser numbers. According to The Telegraph, it is thought the first local officers on the scene were 'not equipped with the devices' when they tried to tackle the attacker. The Police Federation claims a Taser is not fired in 85 per cent of cases but acts as an 'effective' which helps protect communities as well as officers from assaults.

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
This is the sickening moment a van ploughs into a pedestrian in the first moments of a nightmarish rampage by swordsman which left a 14-year-old boy dead. Footage captured on a doorbell camera shows a van driven by a 36-year-old suspect careering off a road and into a house in Hainault, east London, hitting a passerby in the process. Blood-curdling screams, which MailOnline has removed from the video above as they are so disturbing, can be heard piercing the air in the immediate aftermath of the crash on the corner of New North Road and Laing Close involving the dark grey vehicle just before 7am. It marked the beginning of the terrifying 22-minute ordeal in the quiet streets during which a teenage boy was stabbed to death and four other people, including two police officers, wounded as a knifeman went on the rampage. Graphic footage shared online shows the suspect dragging the body of the child across a road in a quiet residential street, moments after hacking him to death with a samurai sword in front of horrified neighbours. Witnesses said the schoolboy 'died on the spot' after having a sword nearly 2ft in length swung at his head as part of what police believe to be a 'random' attack. The suspect, clad in a yellow hoodie, was seen prowling the streets and climbing onto rooftops after dumping the van 100 metres away in a cul-de-sac, as police swarmed the area in the early hours of Monday morning. The nightmare was brought to an end when the suspect wielding the huge weapon was tasered by hero unarmed police officers, with the dramatic arrest being caught on CCTV.

A swordsman reportedly screamed 'does anyone believe in God?' during a 'random' rampage which saw a 14-year-old boy tragically killed and two police officers seriously wounded. The 36-year-old suspect had rammed his van into a house near Hainault Tube station early this morning before allegedly slashing at members of the public and police officers who responded to terrified 999 calls for help. Chilling CCTV footage captured the knifeman prowling the streets of the London suburb before setting upon innocent passers-by with his huge blade during a 22-minute reign of terror. Door camera footage showed the dramatic moment the suspect was finally arrested on a driveway of a semi-detached house after being tasered by a female officer who bravely ran towards him. During the rampage the suspect was allegedly heard screaming at emergency service workers 'Does anyone here believe in God?' after a teenage boy was fatally stabbed.

This is the dramatic moment a brave female police officer confronted a sword-wielding man after a 'random' attack which left a teenage boy dead and two of her colleagues wounded. CCTV footage emerged showing the female cop, flanked by her male colleagues, demanding the man in a yellow hoodie puts down the weapon after her vaulted a fence into a driveway in Hainault this morning. As officers close in on the man, the unarmed officer can be seen advancing on the man  before tasering him despite the fact he was still brandishing his sword. She then stands over him before armed colleagues move into the arrest the man, moments after they were scrambled to east London , following reports that a van had rammed into a home just before a knifeman started prowling the streets. A 14-year-old boy who was 'on his way to school' was fatally injured while two other members of the public were also attacked, in what police believe was a 'random' incident. In the ensuing action, two police officers were injured before a suspect was eventually cornered, tasered and arrested seconds before armed reinforcements arrived. The injured officers were rushed to hospital with 'serious' injuries. Two members of the public were also treated following the horror rampage that unfolded. Police say, the suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in hospital where he is being treated for injuries he received when he crashed his van into a home.
