Personal life
Before heading to Tokyo, Kohama was born in Osaka. Toru Yamashita, a One Ok Rock colleague, is his childhood friend. They met together with two other members, Takuya Makihara and Kohei Nakamura. When they were fifth and sixth graders, they formed HEADS, a hip-hop dance group. They were also active before their debut and competed in dance competitions from 1995 to 1999. They debuted with "Screeem!" a single was released. In July 2000, the first single "Gooood or Bad" was released, followed by its second single "Gooood or Bad." Amuse, Inc., a well-known musician who released music in November, was a member of the Amuse group. Every weekends on bustling streets in Osaka and Tokyo's Akihabara, shopping, and amusement districts, the dance group gave a show.
Heads were disbanded in 2002 and then took a break in 2003 to develop their skills. Heads came to an end at this point as a four-member group. They merged with seven other members and were dubbed Ground Zero. Toru and Ryota's 2004 activities as Ground Zero continued. Toru began to explore his acting in 2005 and appeared in television series Shibuya Fifteen as a minor character.
He was invited by Toru to form a rock band alongside their upperclassman Alex and Toru's friend Koyanagi Yuu. Kohama had no intention to join a band or play bass until he discovered Red Hot Chili Peppers and was inspired to play bass by Flea. During the early days of One Ok Rock, Kohama only talked to Toru because he was afraid of him, and he didn't get to talk to vocalist Takahiro Moriuchi for about a year because he was afraid of him. When Alex was discovered groping a schoolgirl on a subway and almost gave up playing bass to learn to play guitar, he was the most vocal. Kohama co-produced the song "Deeper Deeper" with drummer Tomoya Kanki and wrote the song "Deeper Deeper."
Since 2010, Kohama hasn't taken off his shirt when performing, mainly inspired by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and he has a lot of tattoos on his body and arms. Taka accompanied Kohama to improve his English during One Ok Rock's English interviews, as Taka is the best English speaker in the band.
Michelle Lavigne, the sister of Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, was married on February 18, 2017 by Ryota. They had guessed they had married because Taka said "congratulates on marriage, Ryota" during a second appearance at a festival. "I registered for marriage this month," Kohama replied, adding to her merriment. Michelle is a girl from "Mexico." Michelle had also changed her name to Michelle Kohama on her Instagram account, which was surprising to fans. Kohama confirmed on Instagram that he and Lavigne were married. He revealed the birth of their first child, a child, in October 2017.
