Ryan Perry Career

Amateur career

Perry, a native of Pomona, California, played collegiate baseball at the University of Arizona. He pitched with future Tigers teammate Daniel Schlereth while at Arizona. He played collegiate summer baseball for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2007, where he was named a league all-star and earned the money in the annual all-star game.

Professional career

Perry was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as the 21st overall pick in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. At the end of 2008 Baseball America named him as the Detroit Tigers' second best prospect, behind Rick Porcho. Perry will be on the Tigers' opening day roster for the 2009 season, according to a release on April 1, 2009.

Perry made his major league debut against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 8. In the Tigers' 5–1 win, he had a scoreless eighth inning.

When Jeremy Bonderman was withdrawn from the disabled list on June 8, Perry was sent to the Toledo Mud Hens.

He debuted as a Detroit middle relief pitcher in the 2010 season. By pitching two-thirds of an inning, he won his first game against the Los Angeles Angels on May 1.

Perry was placed on the right biceps tendinitis list on June 10, just like him on the 15-day disabled list. He was called back to work on July 3 after recovering in Toledo after rehabilitation.

Perry, who was just 17, had a 3.79 ERA over 621+2/3 innings in Detroit, walked 38 and striking out 60. He had two saves in the 2011 and beyond, allowing 55 hits in 553 runs over 62+2/3 innings, but his strikeout rate dropped precipitously, extending into 2011 and beyond.

Perry was optioned to Toledo on May 28, 2011 to make room for spot starter Andrew Oliver after starting the season with a 12.19 ERA through 13 appearances.

Perry was traded by the Tigers to Collin Balester in the Washington Nationals on December 9, 2011.

Perry was signed by the Tigers to a minor league deal on February 27, 2015. On June 9, the Toledo Mud Hens released him.
