On March 13, Roy McGrath, 53, left his $1 million home in Naples, Florida, and told his wife Laura that he had been planning to travel to Maryland for his court hearing. But he vanished, with the FBI following him 800 miles to Tennessee and monitoring multiple cell phones that he used while on the run. Since being the Executive Director of the Maryland Environmental Services (MES), he was accused of stealing more than $270,000 in state funds over a year. On March 15, two days after his hearing was supposed to begin in Baltimore, Maryland, the FBI searched his house. The FBI worked with US Marshals to locate McGrath before he was charged during the shooting, according to Baltimore Banner reports close to the probe. It's unclear if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or as a result of law enforcement's shooting of him. It comes as a mystery author is being investigated after releasing a 'tell all book' dendenying the charges against ex-Governor Larry Hogan's former chief of staff just days before he was killed in a standoff with the FBI. McGrath resigned from Hogan in 2020 and is accused of telling MES that the former governor had approved the payments, something Hogan denies.
