Roy Haynes Life

Roy Owen Haynes (born March 13, 1925) is an American jazz drummer and group leader.

Haynes is one of jazz's most well-known drummers, and he has performed in a variety of styles, from swing and bebop to jazz fusion and avant-garde jazz.

In the 1950s, "Snap Crackle" was a nickname given to him. He has also supervised his own bands, some of whom perform under the name Hip Ensemble.

He has been nominated for a Grammy Award for his efforts as a leader, Fountain of Youth, and Whereas.

He continues to perform around the world and was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1999.

Career

Haynes was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the United States' Roxbury neighborhood, to Barbados parents. Michael E. Haynes, his younger brother, who served with Martin Luther King Jr. in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and for forty years as pastor of the Twelfth Baptist Church, where King had been a member while pursuing his doctoral degree at Boston University, where he served as a leader in the black community of Massachusetts.

Haynes made his career debut in 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts, where he began working full-time in 1945. He served with Lester Young, a saxophonist, from 1947 to 1952, and was a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker's quintet from 1949 to 1952. He performed with pianist Bud Powell, as well as saxophonists Wardell Gray and Stan Getz. He toured with singer Sarah Vaughan from 1953 to 1958, and performed with her.

Jim Keltner and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones recorded a tribute song, and he appeared on stage with the Allman Brothers Band in 2006 and Phish's Page McConnell in 2008. Watts wrote, "Age seems to have just passed him by." He's eighty-three years old, and in 2006 he was named Best Contemporary Jazz Drummer [in the Modern Drummer magazine's readers' poll]. He's amazing."

Haynes lent his voice to Grand Theft Auto IV, an open-world video game, in order to declare himself as the DJ for Jazz Nation Radio 108.5, the fictional jazz radio station.

In recent years at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, Haynes has been known to celebrate his birthday on stage. His 95th birthday celebration was postponed in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
