Rosanna DeSoto (born September 2, 1950) is an American actress who has appeared in films and television.

She is best known for her appearances in Stand and Deliver, in which she received an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female, and in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1989) as Vito McMullen's wife (Dustin Hoffman).

Early life and education

DeSoto was born in San Jose, California, on September 2, 1950. Both of her parents were Mexican immigrants from Michoacán. DeSoto had four brothers and four sisters, making her one of nine siblings. She spent her early years handpicking apples, particularly apples.

DeSoto graduated from San Jose State University with a double major in Spanish literature and drama. DeSoto rehearsed and appeared with the Light Opera Company during her time at SJSU.

Personal life

DeSoto was married to Jonathan Taplin from 1974 to 1978. Daniela, their one daughter, was born in 1976.

Since September 20, 1980, DeSoto has been married to David S. Ward. Sylvana Ward Durrt (born 1981) is their daughter.

In addition, DeSoto was the aunt of Ken Ramoz, who appeared in such films as Gettysburg (1993) and Getting Even with Dad (1994).

Career

DeSoto made her film debut in 1979 with The In-Laws. In Cannery Row (1982), she appeared opposite Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. DeSoto received the Golden Eagle Award for Best Actress for her role in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982). She appeared in About Last Night, opposite Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, playing Mrs. Lyons in 1986. In the short-lived sitcom The Red Foxx Show, she portrayed waitress Diana Olmos in the same year.

DeSoto appeared in the biographical film La Bamba in 1987. She portrayed Connie Valenzuela, Ritchie Valenzuela's mother, in the film directed by Lou Diamond Phillips. In the 1988 biopic Stand and Deliverance, DeSoto teamed with Phillips once more, where she played Fabiola Escalante, the wife of Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos). Her success earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female.

She appeared in Family Business, 1989, as Dustin Hoffman's wife. She landed her first role in Face of the Enemy in the same year. She appeared in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). Linda was portrayed by DeSoto in "The 24 Hour Woman (1999). She has appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as in the soap opera.
