Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota legislator on the progressive Squad, won a closer-than-expected Democratic primary over Tuesday over a centrist opponent who questioned the incumbent's endorsement for the 'defund the police' campaign. Omar, a Minneapolis-based politician and one of the left's most prominent voices in Congress, has defended calls to rebalance public safety funds into community-based services. She squared off with Samuels, whose north Minneapolis base is more vulnerable to violent crime than other parts of the city. Samuels argued that Omar is divisive and that he helped to defeat a ballot measure last year that sought to replace the city's police department with a new public safety unit. He and others were also successful in suing the city to demand that it meet minimum police force levels as required by the city's charter.
