Roger Searle Penske (born February 20, 1937) is an American businessman and entrepreneur who was previously a professional auto racing racer and formerly a professional auto racing driver.

He is best known for his ownership of Team Penske, DJR Team Penske, the Penske Corporation, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar, and other auto-related companies. In 1961, Sports Illustrated named him Sports Car Club of America Driver of the Year.

He started one of the most profitable teams in IndyCar Series and NASCAR racing after recovering from driving just a few years ago.

With 18 victories, he is the most profitable owner in the Indianapolis 500.

He is known by his nickname "The Captain."

Penske also acts as a race strategist for his IndyCar team, now for driver Will Power.Penske, is a corporate director at GM and was chairman of Super Bowl XL in Detroit, Michigan.

He served on the board of The Home Depot and Delphi Automotive before resigning to chair the Detroit Super Bowl Committee.

Penske was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 and has a net worth of $1.83 billion as of 2018.

Early life and education

Penske was born in 1937 in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Jay's father, Jay, was a successful corporate executive for a metal fabrication company and encouraged his son to become an entrepreneur. He bought older cars, repaired them, and sold them at a profit from his family's home in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1955 and is a 1959 graduate of Lehigh University, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta.

Personal life

Penske has five children, two with first wife Lissa, and three with second wife Kathy: Roger Jr., Gregory, Blair, Mark, and Jay Penske.

He owns many rare American and European cars, including a Ferrari FXX, of which only 30 were built.

Penske Racing's Super PAC, Mitt Romney's Restore Our Future, raised $500,000 to Restore Our Future, Mitt Romney's Super PAC. He had been considered a potential candidate for Mayor of Detroit but he refused to run. In the 2020 United States presidential election, Penske endorsed Donald Trump.

Racing career

Penske's first racing venture was in hillclimbing, but then went road course racing in Porsches. Penske made his first competitive appearance at the now-abandoned Marlboro Motor Raceway in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

He was a well-known racer by 1960 (Sports Illustrated SCCA Driver of the Year). He competed in two Formula One Grands Prix and took the NASCAR Pacific Coast Late Model Championship at Riverside in 1963. He never rode the Indianapolis 500: He was given a rookie test at Indianapolis but decided against it for business reasons; rookie Mario Andretti took the field for Penske.

Penske continued racing until 1965, when he resigned as a racer, to concentrate on his first Chevrolet dealership in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Multiple former teammates told The Associated Press that Gil de Ferran, the 2003 Indianapolis 500 champion and holder of the closed-course land speed record, died on Friday while racing with his son at The Concourse Club in Florida. He was 56 years old at the time. At the private course in Opa-Locka, Florida, Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan said he was with his son, Luke, when he pulled over and said he wasn't feeling well. Kanaan said de Ferran appeared to have suffered a heart attack and could not be revived. When de Ferran won the 2003 Indy 500 for Roger Penske, it was his third straight victory in the 'Greatest Spectacle in Racing' for Penske, who has now won a record 19 victories in the storious Memorial Day weekend race.
