Roger Mahony Life

Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony KGCHS (born February 27, 1936) is an American cardinal and former prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 to 2011.

He served as Auxiliary Bishop of Fresno from 1975 to 1980, and Bishop of Stockton from 1980 to 1985, before his appointment as Los Angeles Archbishop. Mahony was born in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley area and raised in the San Fernando Valley area of the city. In 1962, he was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Monteresno.

He was elected auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Fresno in January 1975 and consecrated bishop in March 1975.

In 1980, he was first elected Bishop of Stockton.

Mahony was ordained Archbishop of Los Angeles by Pope John Paul II in 1985 and became the first Los Angeles native to hold the office.

He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1991 and voted in the papal conclaves that elected Popes Benedict XVI and Francis. Mahony, a Los Angeles archbishop, was instrumental in splitting the archdiocese into five administrative divisions and assisting in the construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, which opened in September 2002.

He has also been instrumental in the cover-up of sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church sexual harassment scandal, relocating hundreds of violent priests.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles apologised for priest abuses and announced a record-breaking deal with 58 people worth $660 million in 2011.

Following the release of staff files describing priest sexual assault cases during part of Mahony's tenure, Archbishop Gómez relieved Mahony of his public and episcopal positions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Early life

Roger Mahony was born in Los Angeles, California, and the son of Victor and Loretta (née Baron) Mahony, a second-generation Irish American couple, was born. Louis is his twin brother and Neil has an older brother, Louis. Roger Mahony attended St. Charles Borromeo Grammar School in North Hollywood and attended Los Angeles College, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles's junior seminary.

Mahony was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Aloysius Willinger on May 1, 1962, after attending Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary and St. John's Seminary. Mahony earned a Master of Social Work degree from Catholic University of America in 1964. Mahony served in the Diocese of Montesno and the newly established Diocese of Fresno for the next 13 years. He also taught social work at Fresno State University in Fresno, California. In February 1967, Mahony was appointed a monsignor.

By Pope Paul VI, Mahony was elected auxiliary bishop of Fresno and titular bishop of Tamascani on January 7, 1975. He received his episcopal consecration from Bishop Hugh Donohue on March 19, 1975, with Bishop William Johnson and John Cummins as co-consecrators. Mahony was appointed as the first chair of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board in 1995, where he worked with the United Farm Workers and other growers to resolve labor disputes.

Mahony was appointed bishop of Stockton by Pope John Paul II on February 15, 1980, as announced by nuncio Jean Jadot. During his tenure at Stockton, Mahony dismissed two extern priests for sexual assault.

Mahony was ordained Archbishop of Los Angeles on July 16, 1985, becoming the first Angeleno to hold the position. In the consistory of June 28, 1991, Pope John Paul II appointed Cardinal-Priest of Santi Quattro Coronati.

After the former Cathedral of Saint Vibiana was badly wounded in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Mahony began plans to build the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, one of the country's largest Catholic cathedrals. It was dedicated on September 2, 2002.

Mahony presided over the controversial auction of a large number of rare books, including a Gutenberg Bible, donated to St. John's Seminary by philanthropist and book collector Carrie Estelle Doheny in 1987. The auction raised $37.8 million, which was clearly intended for an endowment to assist new priests in their preparations. Nevertheless, by 1996, only $23 to 25 million had been spent, including $1 million for a makeover of Mahony's living quarters.

Mahony revealed in May 1998 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. On June 15, 1998, he underwent a prostatectomy; doctors at the time were positive that the procedure was "successful" and hopeful that no further intervention would be required.

Mahony was one of the cardinal electors in 2005-pop's papal conclave, as well as the 2013 papal conclave that picked Pope Benedict XVI.

Mahony was a board member of the Catholic University of America. He served on a number of committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, including those on Liturgy, Pro-Life Projects, and Migrant & Refugees. He is still a consultant for the former two committees.

Mahony was a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (1984-1989) and the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Itinerants (1986-1991). Mahony served on the Pontifical Council for Social Communications (1989-2000), the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See (2000–2019), as well as the Congregation for Eastern Churches.

Mahony issued a pastoral letter in 1992 on the subject of television news and the entertainment industry.

Mahony spoke out against the inclusion of immigrant bills in bills like the Sensenbrenner-King Bill, which was debated in Congress in late 2005 and 2006. He wrote to President George W. Bush that such proposed legislation would effectively outlaw the provision of charitable assistance and religious ministries to those who are not eligible immigrant status. Mahony ordered the clergy and laity of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to dismiss H.R. on Ash Wednesday, 2006. If it were to become statute, it would have been 4437. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, two of New York, lobbied for the Senate to reconsider a comprehensive immigration reform bill rather than the enforcement-only bill that passed the House of Representatives. Mahony also blamed the US Congress for the illegal immigrant crisis, accusing them of failing to act on the matter in the past 20 years, although H.R. 4437 as punitive and open to abuse interpretation, and S. 2611 as a result.

The Vatican under Pope Benedict XVI announced San Antonio archbishop José Horacio Gómez as the coadjutor archbishop of Los Angeles on April 6, 2010. Mahony will reach his mandatory retirement age of 75 the following year. Gómez replaced Mahony after the formal transfer took place at Our Lady of the Angels' Cathedral on February 28, 2011, with Mahony's resignation taking canonical effect on March 1, 2011.

Mahony intended to devote more time to advocacy for immigrants in his retirement, a cause he has supported for many years. He lives in North Hollywood at his childhood parish.
