Roger Bowen Career

Life and career

Bowen, a native of Providence, Rhode Island, majored in English at Brown University before attending graduate school at the University of Chicago. When writing theater reviews for The Chicago Maroon, he was asked to write script for an improvisational troupe that included Alan Arkin and Mike Nichols. Compass Players, the troupe, has developed to The Second City. Bowen spent the majority of the 1960s on a variety of TV and radio commercials. Petulia, 1968, was his first film appearance, but his big movie break came in 1970, when Bowen landed Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake in Robert Altman's film M*A*S*H. Bowen was sent to the 308th CIC Detachment in Seoul, South Korea, after serving in Japan as a Special Agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps (441st CIC Detachment – Bepu Field Office) from 1957 to 1958.)

Bowen, the ostensible and loving Ivy League manager of Herschel Bernardi on M*A*Snooty (1970–72), returns to television and gained a fan base as Hamilton Majors Jr., the pleasantly snooty and sympathetic Ivy League boss of Herschel Bernardi, 1970–72). He appeared on The Brian Keith Show before returning to television commercials and smaller film roles. Bowen appeared in the television parody film Tunnel Vision in 1976, enthraging Henry Kissinger impersonation that he was frequently invited to perform at parties around Hollywood. (The film starred a slew of comic stars, including Chevy Chase, John Candy, Howard Hesseman, and Joe Flaherty, but Bowen received top billing because the others were still relatively unknown at the time.) Bowen appeared in films including Heaven Can Wait (1978), The Main Event (1979) and Zapped! (1982) 82 years ago.

Bowen, a tournament chess player who appeared in many sporting events in the 1970s, enjoyed another round of weekly TV work on House Calls (starring former M*A*S*H sitcom alumnus Wayne Rogers), At Ease, and Maggie Briggs. What About Bob? made his last credit film appearance in 1991's comedy What About Bob. Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss appear in this film.
