Manny Machado of San Diego became the first MLB player to be suspended by the all-new pitch clock

Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres was the first victim of baseball's new timing device, which made its debut on Friday amid a limited number of spring training openers and Manny Machado. Machado discovered that the pitch clock works both directions. As the 15-second clock wound under 8 seconds in the first inning, he was not fully in the batter's box and alert to the Seattle Mariners lefty Robbie Ray. Umpire Ryan Blakney called time and signaled strike one against Machado, who finished second in last season's NL MVP race.

Thanks to Yordan Alvarez, the Astros now lead the Mariners in the ALDS by a 2-0 margin

Yordan Alvarez and his mighty bat made it to another wild run in sixth innings off Seattle ace Luis Castillo, who beat the Mariners 4-2 for a 2-0 lead in the AL Division Series. In the ninth inning, Alvarez led the Astros an 8-7 victory after a game in which they'd trailed by four runs. He was the Game 1 hero with his gut-punch, three-run shot off reigning AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray with two outs. Castillo, who was acquired from the Reds near the trade deadline and pitching 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball against Toronto in the wild-card round, gave up an early home run to Kyle Tucker but not much else as he moved a 2-1 lead into the sixth.
