Personal life
Genest was born in LaSalle, Quebec, and grew up in Châteaux, Quebec. Diagnosed with a brain tumor, he was on the surgery waiting list for six months, during which he considered his life and potential death before undergoing the procedure with minimal complications.
Genest was tattooed over the majority of his body (approximately 90% of his body) and held the Guinness World Record for the most tattoos of human bones (139). He held the Guinness World Record for most tattoos of insects (176), before Joshua Thornton took the award in November 2018.
Career
Genest was also active in various sideshows and freak shows around Canada as an illustrated man, despite being tattooed as an illustrated man. Genest was first recognized in the public on November 13, 2006, shortly after beginning his facial tattoos in a blog post on Body Modification Ezine (BME)'s ModBlog, which was followed in March 2008 by his first interview, by which time his tattoos were largely complete. Genest said in this interview that he preferred the moniker "Zombie" to "Skullboy" because BME had been referring to him.
The RzyM's Channel's introductions prompted increasing mainstream media coverage, particularly in Bizarre's June 2008 issue. Genest was depicted as a Tattooed Man at the Carnival in the 2009 television film Carny, starring Lou Diamond Phillips as a small-town sheriff. Following this, he was discovered by Marc Quinn in Bromont, Quebec, where Genest was living with the sideshow Alive on the Inside at Carnivàle Bleue in the summer of 2010.
Since being discovered by Formichetti, who was also Mugler's creative director, Genest was included in the latest Thierry Mugler Autumn/Winter men's collection, headlining it on the brand's website on January 19, 2011. The menswear show was staged due to Genest's presence and Lady Gaga's invitation, which culminated in the show's completion, something that was not intended. Formichetti was also influenced by his presence on the collection's design. The show was accompanied by a video starring Genest, shot by fashion photographer Mariano Vivanco. In the fashion show for the women's 2011 Autumn/Winter collection, he later appeared alongside Lady Gaga.
Genest was included in Lady Gaga's music video for "Born This Way" on February 27, 2011, with Lady Gaga wearing makeup to imitate Genest's tattoos. In an essay titled "Hard To Be Passive," Genest appeared in the sixth volume of Vogue Hommes Japan. Formichetti and Genest are interviewed in the Summer issue of GQ Style (UK), with Genest shot in Mugler by Karim Sadli for the editorial.
Genest was featured in a film titled "Go Beyond the Cover" in late 2011, promoting Dermablend professional makeup products. In a video where a makeup team covered all the tattoos on his head, torso, arms, and a portion of his back in its concealer kit, a makeup team was featured. "How do you judge a book?" says the advert. He proceeded to remove portions of the makeup, starting with a portion of his chest to reveal the tattoo underneath, then moving to his face. The process of applying the cover-up played backwards is then shown in the video. Thanks to this campaign's commercial success, L'Oréal for Genest's first-ever male spokesperson. Genest appeared in the Polish pop singer Honey's music video. On January 19, 2012, she recorded her song "Sabotage" on Youtube.
The Tonner Doll Company produced "Zombie Boy," a limited edition character doll of Genest's likeness, for the 2012 San Diego Comic Con. He was also a Tonner's guest at the convention. Each doll comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by Genest (as "Rico the Zombie"). The limited edition was limited to 500 dolls, none of which were available as of July 27, 2012.
Genest was the face of the Jay-Z music fashion brand Roc-A-Wear for its re-launch in Europe in September 2012.

In the 2013 film 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves, he was cast as the character "Foreman." Genest was included in the film's marketing, including on posters and in trailers. However, Genest was largely edited out of the final version due to a series of post-process problems stemming from the 2011 version of the film, in which Universal executives wanted Reeves to become a more integral part of the film.
On the single "Dirty Rejects," which was released on May 21, 2013, Genest collaborated with British solo artist KAV. They spent the first part of 2013 recording an album and a film titled "Monsters Versus the World" in Los Angeles. The initiative was shelved.
Genest was working with Mike Riggs, ex-Rob Zombie guitarist, on a forthcoming album as of January 2015. Riggs has performed Zombie Boy's music. A "Zombie Boy 666 Medley" video was posted on horror news website Bloody Disgusting, which included clips of six songs that would be included on the forthcoming album.
Genest, a psychologist, published a video titled "Normal is an illusion" in June 2017, which related to his brain tumor experiences, among other things.
"Self-Conscious Gene," a 11.5-foot (3.5 m) sculpture of Genest unveiled in 2019, is a new permanent fixture at the Science Museum in London, United Kingdom. Marc Quinn, a British artist, fabricated the statue.
