Richard Craig Shelby (born May 6, 1934) is an American politician who represents Alabama as the senior United States senator from Alabama.
He was first elected to the Senate in 1986 and succeeded Thad Cochran as the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
He served as Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, as well as the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration.
He is the longest serving president of the United States. Shelby earned his law degree from the Birmingham School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama, beating John Sparkman, the previous record holder.
He went on to serve as a city prosecutor (1963–1971).
During this time, he served as a United States Magistrate for the Northern District of Alabama (1966–1970) and Special Assistant Attorney General of Alabama (1969–1971).
In 1970, he was elected to serve in the Alabama Senate.
He was elected from the 7th District to the United States House of Representatives in 1978, where he was part of a group of Conservative Democrats identified as the boll weevils. Shelby won a close election in 1986 as a Democrat in the Senate.

Early life and education
Shelby was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Alice L. (née Skinner) and Ozie Houston Shelby. He graduated from Hueytown High School in Hueytown, Alabama, and then the University of Alabama, where he earned an undergraduate degree in 1957. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1961 from the Birmingham School of Law. On August 29, 1961, he was admitted to the Alabama State Bar for the first time. He obtained a LL.B. In 1963, the University of Alabama School of Law was founded.
