End of the road for red lights for cyclists? AI traffic lights that prioritise bike riders over cars are tested to give them 'uninterrupted journeys'

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 10, 2024
A council is rolling out AI technology at a toucan crossing to give cyclists  'uninterrupted journeys' by turning lights red for cars. The crossing - also used by pedestrians - will use senors to detect riders up to 30m away and change the lights so those on bikes will have a 'smoother' journey and make it safer for those walking across. Transport for West Midlands and Solihull Council installed the new tech on A34 Stratford Road near Blythe Valley, Birmingham. Developed by VivaCity, the sensors aim to promote active travel and prioritise cyclists over motor vehicles in the next step of what has been dubbed the 'war on motorists'. The council claims that by detecting cyclists earlier, the sensors both help reduce the chance of collisions and reduce waiting times at crossings.

Across the country, Labour MPs seeking re-election including Naz Shah and shadow frontbencher Wes Streeting, are facing tough battles from independent candidates campaigning almost entirely on foreign policy who already have huge support.
