A deafening fire horn (center) has blasted from the roof of Milford's historic town hall at 11:45 a.m., a warning for nearby granite quarry workers in the 'Granite State' of New Hampshire to break for lunch and at other times indicate an emergency or a school snow day. However, the warning, which some described as a fog horn that could be heard for miles, was silenced in August as an unofficial courtesy to Jennifer Fowler's 12-year-old autistic son Lukas (pictured together right) who thought the world was ending when he heard it. The step, however, has sparked a tumultuous online debate over the fate of the Milford horn, which divided the town and pitted people against each other. On Saturday, the controversy, pitting the interests of Lukas against ardent town preservationists, reached its first public hearing (left), when 1,000 signatories demanded that the town'reinstate and then maintain the fire horn in its regular and historic daily use in perpetuity.'
