The teddy bears line the graves of 450 dead infants and babies from the heartbreaking cause

The soft toys (pictured center and inset) help identify the graves in this military cemetery, not of fallen soldiers but infants. They are the children and young children of British families who died in Cyprus in the 1960s and early 1970s, with more than 450 little ones buried here in Dhekelia. The bears were conceived by Annie Macmillan Davies, 61, who was inspired to honor the graves of her parents' graves in the cemetery last year. Many hadn't been to visit in decades, a sad reminder of how military families had to leave their deceased loved ones behind when they were re-posted, long before repatriation was commonplace. Reggie Smith died in British Military Hospital Dhekelia in November 1960 after being taken there with breathing difficulties. Following his death, Joyce and Martin returned to the United Kingdom and were horrified when they discovered the number of baby graves when they returned to the cemetery years later. Reggie's grave is on view, if that's correct.
