Reggie Leach Career

Playing career

"The Riverton Rifle" and "The Chief" were drafted third overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, with Nicknamed "The Riverton Rifle" and "The Chief" being drafted third overall. In Boston's 6-0 home victory over St. Louis on January 31, 1971, Leach scored his first NHL goal. During his Bruins time, he scored nine goals.

On February 23, 1972, Boston sold Leach, Rick Smith, and Bob Stewart to California for Carol Vadnais and Don O'Donoghue. Larry Wright, Al MacAdam, and 1974 first rounder (Ron Chipperfield) transferred to Philadelphia for three seasons in Oakland. In 1974-75, he was instrumental in the Philadelphia Flyers' Stanley Cup triumph. With a one-season contract with the Detroit Red Wings, he concluded his NHL career.

He had a career high in goals (61), points (91), game-winning goals (11), and a plus-minus with a +73 rating during his 1975–76 season with the Philadelphia Flyers. Leach's 61 goals earned him the goal-scoring title (now the Maurice "Rocket") Richard Trophy) for the season as well as the current Flyers franchise record for most goals in a season.

Leach is perhaps best known for his play as one of the only five players, the first Flyer, and the only non-goal shooter to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as a member of the losing team in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He grew up with Roger Crozier (Detroit Red Wings, 1966) and Glenn Hall (St. Louis Blues, 1968), and succeeded Ron Hextall (Philadelphia, 1987) and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 2003). He earned this award in 1976 while shooting NHL records for most goals in a single post-season, winning 19 out of 19 games, beating Canadiens' Newsy Lalonde's 1919 record of 17 goals and the longest streak in the playoffs as his team continued to be swept by Montreal. The new record remains unbeaten, but Jari Kurri of the Edmonton Oilers was matched by the former in 1985, but Leach only played in 2 fewer games. Leach played against the Boston Bruins in five games, a record that he shares today with Maurice Richard, Darryl Sittler, Mario Lemieux, and Newsy Lalonde. In addition, Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders scored 85 goals for the season and playoffs together, a new NHL record.

Leach played in 934 games in total, scoring 381 goals and 285 assists for 666 points. Reggie was also part of the Flyers' 35-game unbeaten streak in 1980, which is a record that holds today, in comparison to the Flyers' home game unbeaten streak of 22 games in the same year. In 1976 Canada Cup, Leach played for Team Canada, assassinating the championship. In 1976 and 1980, he was also a member of the NHL All-Star teams.

Coaching career

Leach served as an assistant coach for the Manitoulin Islanders of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League in late 2007. Leach was the full-time head coach and director of hockey operations in Manitoulin in the spring of 2008.
