The 21-year-old from Griffith University in Queensland ran a time of two minutes 03.14 seconds to just 0.21 seconds off American Regan Smith's record at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. McKeown arrived on the pool deck at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre 20 minutes before the race's scheduled start, but she wasted no time in the first 50 meters at 29.34.
