Reetika Vazirani Life

Reetika Gina Vazirani (9 August 1962 – July 16, 2003) was an Indian/American immigrant poet and scholar.

Life

Vazirani was born in 1962 in Patiala, India, and in 1968, she and her family immigrated to the United States. She received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to travel to India, Thailand, Japan, and China after graduating from Wellesley College in 1984. She has since been granted an M.F.A. As a Hoyns Fellow at the University of Virginia, I am a Hoyns Fellow.

Vazirani and her son Jehan lived in Trenton, New Jersey, near Yusef Komunyakaa, her partner and Jehan's father. As a visiting faculty member at The College of New Jersey, she taught creative writing. Vazrani, a writer-in-Residence at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, with the intention of joining the English Department at Emory University at the time of her death. Vazirani was housesitting in the Chevy Chase, Maryland, home of novelist Howard Norman and his wife, Jane Shore, on July 16, 2003. Vazirani killed Jehan's two-year-old son by stabbing him several times and then fatally stabbed herself.
