Rebecca Horn Life

Rebecca Horn (born 24 March 1944, Michelstadt, Hesse) is a German visual artist best known for her installation art, film directing, and body transformations, including Einhorn (Unicorn), a bodysuit with a large horn protruding vertically from the headpiece.

Der Eintänzer (1978) and Buster's Bedroom (1990) were among her film productions.

Horn now lives and works in Paris and Berlin.

Early life and education

Rebecca Horn was born in Michelstadt, Germany, on March 24, 1944. She was taught to draw by her Romanian governess and became obsessed with expression because writing was not restricted or labeled as oral language. The liking she displayed after World War II was influenced by living in Germany after the war ended. We couldn't speak German." Germans were feared. We had to learn both French and English. We were always going somewhere else and talking about something else. However, I had a Romanian governess who showed me how to draw. I didn't have to draw in German, French, or English. I could just draw."

Horn spent the majority of her late childhood in boarding schools, and when nineteen rebelled against her parents' decision to study economics, she instead concentrated on art. She attended the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts) in 1963. She had to drop out of art classes because she had suffered with severe lung poisoning a year later. "I was 20 years old and living in Barcelona in one of those hotels where rent rooms are paid by the hour." Because no one said it was dangerous, I was working with glass fibre, without a mask, and I became extremely sick. I was in a sanatorium for a year. My parents died. I was completely alone."

Horn began working soft materials, resulting in sculptures influenced by her illness and long-serve.

Horn lived in Hamburg until 1971, in London for a short time (1971–2), and has lived in Berlin since 1973.
