Life and career
Luzier was born in West Newton, Pennsylvania, a tiny town just south of Pittsburgh on a 118-acre farm. He began playing drums at age five and performed in high school jazz, concert, and marching bands. Luzier, a 1988 graduate, moved to Hollywood, California, to pursue a study at the Musicians Institute. He earned his degree from the Percussion Institute of Technology in 1989. Luzier taught rock-style drumming lessons and private lessons at the Musicians Institute (1992-2001), where he later returned as an instructor.
Luzier is best known for his drumming with David Lee Roth, who played drums from 1997 to 2005. Luzier has also performed with the Hideous Sun Demons, a progressive-rock/fusion band formed by DLR bandmembers Toshi Hiketa (guitar) and James LoMenzo (bass). Luzier joined Steel Panther shortly after the band was formed in 1997. He stayed with Steel Panther for six years before his DLR touring schedule interfered. Luzier released an instructional DVD in 2004. It includes a variety of lessons, including double-kick tactics, drum refills, gesture exercises, and warm-ups. It was published by Hal Leonard Publishing Co.
Luzier appeared at the NAMM in Anaheim, California, in January 2006. Billy Sheehan and Toshi Hiketa were present. As part of an impromptu band put together by Steve Ferrone, Robert DeLeo and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots appeared at the same NAMM venue. After Luzier's appearance, the DeLeo brothers invited Luzier to join Army of Anyone, the band's new member.
Korn recruited several touring drummers, including Joey Jordison of Slipknot, after original drummer David Silveria had left (in 2006). Jordison was unable to attend the recording of Slipknot's latest album All Hope Is Gone. Consequently, Korn was looking for a new drummer, and Luzier, according to sources, he and Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu went to Seattle to audition for Korn with James "Munky" Shaffer and Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu. Luzier learned 30 songs when told only five of their songs. Luzier was immediately accepted to join Korn after his audition.
Luzier appeared in Dublin, Ireland, on January 13, 2008, and the band continued to perform with Korn until 2008. Korn and their original producer Ross Robinson produced their ninth studio album together with Luzier and their original producer Ross Robinson. Jonathan Davis, a frontman for Korn, announced in March 2009 that Luzier had been deemed a full member of the band. Luzier was named "UltimateRockGods" Artist Of The Month for July by Luzier.
On their reunion tour in October, Luzier also performed live with Stone Temple Pilots for a few of the band's shows, in addition to drummer Eric Kretz's absence due to his father's death. Luzier appeared on "Change UR World" in November 2010. It was Kat-Tun's thirteenth top-one single on the Oricon charts.
With his side project KXM, Luzier, ex-Dokken and Lynch Mob guitarist George Lynch, and King's X vocalist and bassist Doug Pinnick, he released the self-titled CD "KXM" in 2014.
Luzier has two sons, both born in 2011 and 2015.
