Roy Maurice Mayorga (born April 6, 1970) is an American singer best known as the drummer for the American heavy metal bands Hellyeah and Stone Sour.

He is of Ecuadorian and Cuban descent.

Early life

Mayorga was born in Forest Hills, New York City, on April 6, 1970, to Cuban and Ecuadorian parents. His family immigrated to Florida at the age of four years old. His parents would often play Motown music and rhythm and blues, which were his first introductions to music as a child. He eventually became a fan of Kiss thanks to his older brother, who prompted him to become interested in rock music. At six years old, he began playing drums. His parents divorced quickly, leading to him moving to Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he became involved in the local punk rock scene.

Personal life

Mayorga died as a result of his regular headbanging while drumming in May 2011. He had to learn how to play drums due to the occurrence.

Career

Mayorga formed Youthquake in 1985 in Allentown. When Youthquake's bassist departed from the company, the remaining members formed Word Made Flesh, which Mayorga's brother eventually joined as guitarist.

While living in Allentown, Mayorga befriended the members of Nausea, which culminated in him becoming the band's drummer in 1988. Profane Existence, the band's debut album in 1990, was followed by a European headline tour and a tour in support of D.O.A. In the ensuing year, the band released a number of songs for compilations, as well as "Cybergod." In addition, the tour was held on the west coast of the United States, with local support from Final Conflict, Neurosis, Asbestosdeath, and Mindrot before departing on a second European headline tour backed by the Radicts, but Nausea were unable to complete the tour's final leg. They released their final single "Lie Cycle" on Graven Image Records in 1992, before breaking down in the ensuing months.

Mayorga formed Thorn with Stephan Flam and ex-Nausea guitarist John Jesse after Nausea's breakup. The band rehearslive in their fourth live appearance, according to Roadrunner Records.

In 1996, he appeared with Shelter, a hardcore punk band in New York. In 1996, he appeared on the album The Hollowing, as well as with the metal band Crisis.

Mayorga formed the Soulfly band in 1997, with former Sepultura vocalist Max Cavalera. Much of the band's self-titled debut album was cowritten by him and Cavalera. In 1999, he officially dropped out of the band. He rejoined the band in 2001, appearing on their 2002 album 3, before being forced to leave in 2003 in protest against guitarist Cello Dias' dismissal.

He appeared in Medication from 1999 to 2001 for a brief period of time.

He appeared in 2004 as a member of Abloom's with singer Jasan Radford and Levon Sultanian. Mike Doling (Snot, Soulfly) and John Fahnestock (Snot) were also members of the band. Marcelo Dias a.k.a. replaced Fahnestock with Marcelo Dias a.k.a. Marcello D. Rapp (Soulfly).

He appeared on "The Enemy," "The End," and "Baptized in the Redemption," all tracks being produced and musically written by Dino Cazares and Roy Mayorga in 2005. The song "The End" was the catalyst for a music video.

Mayorga has also worked on films including Legion (2004) and Shudder (2006).

Following Igor Cavalera's absence, he temporarily filled in behind the drumkit for Sepultura's 2006 European tour with In Flames.

He officially joined Stone Sour on May 10, 2006 as a replacement for Joel Ekman. Come What (ever) May was the product of his second appearance. On August 14, 2007, the band toured for the next year and a half before releasing the Live in Moscow album exclusively to iTunes.

During Amebix's 2009 reunion tour, Roy Mayorga performed drums until they broke up in 2012.

Following the death of drummer Phil Baheux, a Belgian metal band Channel Zero declared in October 2013.

On May 6, 2019, Hellyeah's new drummer was named after a performance on May 11, 2019, honoring their former drummer Vinnie Paul. While also announcing Welcome Home as the name of their forthcoming album and that the launch date was postponed to September 27.
